7-12. Bottom fishing

Finally got most of the kinks worked out of the boat, so some buddies and I gave it a shot today. Headed offshore at a leisurely 7:30. Found zero pogies out the shipping channel, so we went to the ol trusty greenie spot and loaded up. Hit some numbers in 110’ and didn’t find what we were looking for. Did pick up a nice scamp on the jig, (with a sardine jigskinz on it) though.

Headed back in to one of my favorite areas a little shallower and were greeted with much better conditions. Nice slow drift and tons of fish on the screens. Started catching big AJs, beeliners, triggers, and all the usual suspects. Ended up with a bunch of bottom fish, some nice kings (one over 30lbs) and even got a little dolphin action. Got spooled on a baitrunner with about 400 yds of braid on it. Big shark I guess.

Cruised in at 40 on a nice ocean. Boat ran good, fish cooperated and had a blast with some great old friends. Glad to finally get back out there.

What kinda of jig did it hit? Other than the skinz(which I use for nearly every jig type)

Nice looking day. What time did you head in? We were coming in from Black Banks and around 20 miles from the harbor at 1:30 the wind picked up and the ocean wasnt very friendly.

Thanks Larry!

Duo, it was an old crappy looking offshore angler jig. I was just screwing around in the garage and remembered I had those jigskinz. I put it on with a heatgun, and kind of screwed it up. But it still looked good, so I figured I would give it a shot. I’ll post a picture of it this afternoon.

Oops lost, we left out of Tybee island. It was rough early, smoothed out after lunch. Headed in about 4 or so.

Ya mid day was great yesterday, very flat, low winds, but HOT! We had slow bite but managed 3 nice cobia. You should experiment with the smaller flat fall jigs and skin them. I have great luck with trigger and grouper on those (80-150g)and also fewer aj thankfully.

Nice job on the cobia! I was surprised we didn’t pick up a few. Every year when the sharks are thick on one of these spots, the cobia usually show up.

You are right about that heat… The wind stopped and it got Hot!

This is really the first time we have fished since Oct last year. Sold old boat and then Rewire and refit on a boat I bought last year. Our first shake down run in May resulted in a short trip due to losing an alternator on port engine. We were just happy to get out and back this time…

I do a good bit of jigging and have a ton of different styles. This one old crappy jig has been in my box so long that all the paint had just about rubbed of it. I’ve had it for years and it never really got bit. Even when it was new. I really just thought it would look good as a sardine. Did catch a few big triggers on it, too. I agree these shorter ones decrease the aj bites. Only caught 2 aj on this all day. The live bait rods probably caught 1000 lbs.[URL=http://s1074.photobucket.com/user/Itzsyd/media/image_zpssrw0v0vq.jpg.html]

Not affiliated with jigskinz, have spoken to Courtland once or twice at the store. But this little test impressed me. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not but I will be ordering a few more and actually putting them on the right way next time.

Nice Kings. Thanks for the report

Itzsyd, the skinz are no coincidence, I have literally outfished stock jigs 99% the time when using a jig with a skin. Favorite being a blue mackerel, for some reason that color has produced the most this year including 1 cobia and many triggers. Jigging is my passion when comes to offshore around here. There is just something about catching gamefish on a jig that feels more accomplishing than just dropping bait and holding on.

I’ve been out with fishduo a few times. He can really catch some nice fish jigging, and otherwise an excellent fisherman.

Nice ones!
