7-18 bottom fishing

My first trip offshore in my boat.
Left the dock at about 6:30 and went out in front of Morris Island to try and net some menhaden…tried for like an hour and could only manage one! It made me feel better that I saw these charter captains having the same trouble. Luckily, I saw some finger mullet at my dock right before we left and was able to net about 20 of those, also had 5lb of frozen squid on board. Forecast was for 2ft seas, but on the way out it seemed like the seas were much higher than that, but they were slow rollers so it wasn’t too bad. Ran out at about 19-20mph as I didn’t want to beat my boat up too bad. Once we got into blue water the seas were flatter. Went to several different numbers within a few mile radius of Charleston 60. 75ft at the deepest and 55ft at the shallowest. It was a very nice day other than it seeming to be hotter than heck. Every spot we went we couldn’t seem to catch anything other than undersized BSB and sharpnose. Between myself and one other person on the boat, we must’ve reeled in 30 sharpnose and a gazillion undersized BSB…bait didn’t stay in the water for more than 15 seconds. Jigs fared similarly. We saw a few king mackerel but weren’t able to get them interested in anything we had. Got stopped by DNR for the first time ever, they were very polite (of course it helped that I had all the required gear). Coming back I was able to run in at 24-25mph, hit the Jetties up for about an hour on the way in…with no luck unfortunately (outside the standard WAY undersized BSB). Back at the dock around 4:30/5:00
All-in-all it was a fun day. I had been wanting to get offshore a bit in my boat (obviously I have to pick my days and since I am only down a weekend or two every month, those times are few and far between). Would’ve liked to land something to keep/eat, but we still had plenty of action and made it back safely.
