7/2 Papa don

Only 2nd trip of the season for the boat. Ben, Dave, Lonnie and I left the dock a little after 0300 hrs. 160 lbs of ice and full tank fuel. Nice night sky and calm waters made for a smooth ride out to Edisto Banks. Lines in at sunup. Bunch of bites but we kept missing. I’m taking the blame on those 'cause I had a left over bag of hoo that was ment only to be used as backup if at all but it came out of the cooler first in the darkness to thaw on the way out. Oh well won’t do that again. Got rid of the mushy minnows and picked at some slingers for the next couple of hours lost one that took a hook and one that had the hook pulled out next to the boat. Then doldrums for a while… Lots of line clearing cause of scattered weeds but beautiful water. Saw loads of very small flying fish - crickets. We had one bait ( a lil frozen) that was doing the prop spin on the right long rigger. So we brought it in and staightened it out. 10 minutes later I looked over and saw it spin from right to left. Like a little black stick moving in an arc out of the water and then back in. And it did it again… Then it hit me (yes I still pretty new at this stuff and had only read about this happening) “There’s a billfish in the spread!” I drop the bait back which was hit but nook taken and Ben runs up on top of the pilothouse and drops back the wayback and we’re hooked up to the boats first billfish. Nice pull to it, it dove, it jumped, it dove, and it got close to the boat and the leader, lure and fish were in view and then it turned and the hook came unglued. Clean release?
We ended up with 5 dolphin, threw back a peanut or two. Highlights catching dolphin on spreader bar I had just made. Catching multiple fish on homemade sea witches. Blue and white was the surprise color of the day. Great crew and good times. Back at the hill around 1630 hrs after a nice downhill run at 28 kts/4500 rpms. The thirstys ran good and drank 96 gallons.

You could have at least mentioned my borrowed bean bags!!! Probably the reason that Billfish was in the spread! Good MoJo!! Glad you guys had a Good safe trip. I was being the perfect husband, blowing up fireworks for the kids and explaining the raging fire to the local fire department and Police!
