Put in early this morning and started off slow. Looked for a long time before trying one spot without much luck…missing a few fish. Packed up and looked again before finding a good mess of fish off a point in 52’ at 8:15. Ran through my bait there catching a bunch of fish. Took home a 23" and might have had one or 2 others that would have been keepers, but most all were short. By the time I stopped fishing the only fish that were still biting were tiny. Gonna try it agin in the morning and check out that spot first thing.
Tried circle hooks for the first time and was missing fish after fish until I started hooking the bait from the bottom of the chin up though the top to expose the point of the hook better. With J hooks I’ve always come sideways though the nose.
How do you guys who use circle hooks normally bait your herring?
They seem to work like they are supposed to with most all the fish lip hooked. The only fish that got gut hooked was the smallest fish I caught, about 12", that inhaled the bait.
