Confused ocean this AM. 2 to 3’s seemed more like 4 to 5’s. Wind would not stop blowing. Got anchored up on the spot and besides a few bsb, nothing much else going on. I new I was in trouble when the 4 to 5 resident cudas usually hovering upcurrent were nowhere to be found. Spades totally absent. I suspect they have spawned and hauled @ss deeper. This is why I always try to squeeze as many May / June reef trips as possible. Time to start working on the tree stand.
BW where were you at? We tried the 60 and found the same. A few BSB’a and a couple ring tails. Couldn’t even get a AJ to take the ring tail.
A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.

Rough? Really? The buoy said 2 ft at 9 seconds all day. We are headed out in the am.

Spades were thick on the 60 on Saturday 7/2. We didn’t see them till we dove, but they were there. Didn’t see many BSB but the ones we saw were 14-15 inches. Saw plenty of other bottom dwellers along with some sheeps. Some of the sheeps became table fare Saturday night.![]()
We caught some of the largest grunts we have ever seen on rod and reel at the 60 Saturday morning.
was at 4ki sat it was dead shot one spade they only came up one time got a shot and they never showe agin rdw how deep were the spades at the 60
I’m so Charleston i got spanish moss on my balls!!
RDW, we also dove the 60 Sat. morning. Shot about a dozen spades free diving after the dive. Did you see us in a 23 Kenner? I didn’t see any other dive flags out (we were close to the bouy)…Jellyfish everywhere!
Da Moons, we saw the spades at about 15 - 20ft. Large schools of amberjack and few barracudas were around as well.
I’m not sure what ocean you were on, but I went out to the Comanche in the morning and the water was absolutely flat, no breeze in some places. I was doing 28 mph, and that’s really good for me.

Charlestoner,
we saw you guys Sat. morning. We were in a 21’ Seapro w/ T-top and Mercury motor. We fished the cars in the morning and then left and went to the Commanche to do some more fishing. Came back around 1:30 and dove the concrete rubble @ the 60.
DaMoons,
The spades were litterly “on” the reef. I mean in the culverts, swarming around the pilings, patroling the slabs… in general they were deep. I found a large “hole” in the rubble maybe 10’ diameter, it was truly shooting fish in a barrel:smiley:. We finished our dive and they followed me to the surface. My son was gonna slide back in and try for one more but they sounded again. The stinging jellies were everywhere.
anbody know about how late in the summer the spades finish there spawn and leave?

All I know is this. There were a bunches of cannon jellies out there, more than I recall seeing that deep. So me thinks me jelly teaser is not so effective at this time of year.
In other words, the spades are fat and happy. I also firmly they are done doing the nasty so when a spades belly is full and its balls are empty, its gonna be tough finding and catching them from now on.![]()
