7/30 Kiawah/Stono

Fished out of Sol Legare yesterday. Grabbed some MM and a few live shrimp from Haddrell’s at opening time (early actually, thanks guys) and off we went.

Bait was plentiful in the creeks, picked up a pile of NICE shrimp, net full of finger mullet, and continued on to our spot to start. Tide was slack, and all we could muster were Mangrove snapper…tossed 4 back quickly. Got bored and didn’t want to wait on tide, so we pushed deeper to another spot. 12 rat reds later finally got one to pull some drag, nice 21" slot fish hit the release well, bit a live shrimp. Few more smalls and off we went, didn’t want to pick through the babies for the big ones.

Hit the Kiawah and ran all the way to the bridge, and under to a favorite hole from a few years back. 5 minutes in had two keeper (16") black drum in the box. Couple small trout, one 10" flounder, and one slot red later we pushed out to explore some new areas. Didn’t do much more fishing, but we learned some spots, got a couple to go check next time when tide is right.

It’s been a long time since I’ve fished that side, and was absolutely shocked at the amount of boat traffic over there…it’s insane!

No pics, fish were given to a gentleman fishing from the dock at the landing until I make some room in my freezer.

Sounds like a nice day on the water. I had no idea we had Mangrove Snapper in our inshore waters. I believe you are the 2nd post I’ve seen recently saying they have caught some. That is pretty cool.

Should have taken a picture…I’ve been told by 3 people that’s what they are, and they should know. Hope I’m not wrong!

Capt Mike Waller has been catching them every trip this summer. It’s for real.
