7/31 Wando

Got a late start this morning, put in at Remley’s just before 7. I figured I’d have a pretty good day being just ahead of the front moving through. The first stop I pulled out my new bone silver spook jr, and hooked up on a 14" trout on the second cast. I thought to myself, this is going to be a good day! I release that first fish and catch two more in the next 5 casts. Both were 12-13", so they went back in. Then I notice my trolling motor stopped working… Oh crap!! Well, I made the best of it after fiddling with connections and resetting the circuit breaker a couple times and proceeded to drift with the current down the bank. In the next 300 yards I picked up three more small trout, all about the same size. I forgot how much fun it is to catch fish on topwater.

I wanted to go catch some bait, but with the trolling motor no longer working, I quickly gave up on that idea after a few failed attempt to get close enough to some mullet running the big motor and running up to the bow, and running back after throwing the net to keep the boat out of the grass. Dang it, I’ll just stick to artificials today.

I tie on a gold flake doa, add a little pro cure shrimp flavor to it and commence fishing. I never even looked at a red today, but i did manage 6 more little dink trout. I kept moving trying to find bigger fish, but every one was 12-13".

Any way, I had a ball catching them on topwater this morning. I absolutely cant wait to get back out again, this time with a working trolling motor.

ever figure out the trolling motor?

I didn’t have time yesterday, but I’ll dig into it my next day off. I imagine its either corroded connections or brushes. I use it often, so my money is on brushes at this point.

Well good luck and hope it’s an easy fix.

Try throwing the net from the console, and keeo your outboard at the same pitch and don’t rev it up if possible. Even a Clemson fan can do it!

Thanks Rob, I’m sure it wont be too difficult.

Yakman, I couldn’t get close enough to throw from the console, that was the original plan, but the mullet kept spooking before I could get close enough. I did manage to catch a net full of 1 1/2" shrimp but they were barely big enough to put on a hook, so I just dumped them back overboard.
