7/6 jeddies

Not the day to go fishing at the jeddies in a flats boat but did it anyway. Tried troling for spanish for a while as the sun was coming up- pulled one off, caught a bsb and an eel??? about 1.5 feet long silver with some snappy teeth. The threw out the anchor, 3 reds 17,18,23 1 flounder 17 and a hammerhead 3.5- and some small stuff. bait o’ choice- sliced up hadens. The hadens were caught by the fort and they were the biggest I have seen 4 inches or more.
So the question of the day? If a red fish is right at 23 inches and I mean right at 23. Can you keep it. I threw it back, but if I wanted to and dnr checked it what would the verdict be?

Pinch tail on the red? Says in regs they are measured pinched.

Did your wierd eel like critter look like this? I caught one at the jetties last week. Disturbing looking fella. Didn’t get a good head shot but it had a set of teeth on him! Looked like a strip of tin foil.

when in doubt, throw it out.

for the cost of 1 DNR ticket you could buy a couple fresh caught fish every week for a year

Frozen whole or live. Trolling for kings.

What you got there is a Atlantic Cutlass Fish AKA ribbon fish. They can grow as long as 5 feet and weigh up to 8 lbs. I catch those a good bit out at Bulls Bay while fishing grubs for trout. Cool looking fish !

When I first moved down here, I caught at red just shy of 23", and thought I would keep it as to never having tasted this type of fish. Low and behold dnr shows up and checks equipment and then asks about fish, so I pull the red out and hand it to him, and to my surprise i see him pinch the tail, which puts it over 23 by a hair… Of course he keeps the fish and i keep a $110 dollar fine… Im not complaining, I just wasnt aware at the time that they would pinch the tail, and while ignorance is no excuse, i look at it as a learning experience and anytime they are even close i throw them back…

They pinch unless it is close to under size. YMMV.

Umm, you gonna eat that?
