7 Degrees South

I spent a few months trapped on an island. There wasn’t much to do so I went fishing, fishing, and a little bit more fishing. It was a rough four months…

Nice job on your deployment! Looks as though they have upgraded there boats to rent. If you go again; go over by the orchard side where all the donkeys are and hit the flats…have some of the biggest bonefish I have ever caught.

I spent exactly 7 months there during Desert Storm flying B-52’s. Some of the best offshore fishing known to man. If you can call it offshore. We would get worn out on tuna and hoo’s trolling within a mile of the beach! Back then it was $50.00 for a half day trip (split between 4 guys). On a whole day we would bring in enough fish to feed the whole squadron! I wish I could go back, knowing what I know now about saltwater fishing. I didn’t know anything about it then. Missed out on alot of bottom fishing opportunities! I did spend ALL of my spare time either ON of IN the water. Our version of bottom fishing was snorkeling with a handline for grouper and many fish we could not identify. Did pretty good with the grouper, just snorkeling out from the beach. I think I would give my left nut to go back for a visit! I do remember bringing in alot of tuna HEADS. The sharks were huge and plentiful outside of the lagoon.

That yellowfin has a birth defect. Look at his lower anal fin.

If the comedy channel on your XM goes out switch your VHF to 68.

It’s been many years since I’ve been to Diego as well. I miss it so much.

The biggest fish I’ve ever had on the end of a line was a mile outside the inlet, to the left. Our first pass through the first set of birds we saw, we had three knock downs. I grabbed the pole nearest me, and didn’t let go for 45 minutes. We never saw any color, or any sign of the fish. The others two fish were 20 - 30 lb. tuna from that series of knock downs. As I’m getting worn out, one of my pilots wants to spell me for a bit. He takes the rod and fights for a while. I get rested a bit, get the rod back. The little guy driving the MWR boat gets his gloves on and walks over to the line. He reaches for it, and I’m thinking, “what the heck is he doing?” He pulls up on the line, and I crank in the slack. It seems to work for a few minutes. Then, on one of his pulls . . . . . the line gives!!!

I couldn’t straighten my left arm out for about 5 days from that fight.

Under and Plebe know . . . . it is an amazing fishery. Like Under Contract said, within sight of the beach, your in 600 feet of water getting big game fish. Take the catch back to the docks, give some of the meat to the guys who just cleaned the fish as payment for their services, and then go over to the Seaman’s Club and have them cook it all up for ya. Fried, raw, sesame, whatever. You couldn’t ask for a better situation.

Plebe, those are excellent pictures. Looks like you had a good time on the best part of Diego there. I’m sure those are some great memories for you.

thats what must of made it eat an antiquated, non-fish catching, plain jane cedar plug. people actually catch fish on those things?..

man that place is out there

whats the fly time from the us?

I spent 23 hours in air leaving from Charleston. I made three stops in between: Philadelphia, London, and Bahrain. When I flew home, I flew to Bahrain and Kuwait. The flight from Kuwait was 13-14 hours in a completly full 777. That was alot of fun

Diego Garcia, BIOT (British Indian Ocean Territory). It is just a speck on the map just over 2,000 miles from nowhere. The Indian ocean off course. An Atol, about 2 miles wide at the widest point. Shaped like a horseshoe with a beautiful lagoon in the center. Just wide enough to fit a 14,000’ runway. Nonstop in a B-52 is 28.6 hours from the tip of Maine. Unfortunately, only military or contract workers of the BIOT can go there :frowning_face::frowning_face:. It is a real paradise!! But only if you love fishing, diving and seclusion. Used to snorkel/ snorkel-fish every morning as the sun came up. Miles of the most beautiful water and beach and not a hint of civilization in site.
