7 great whites in one day HHI

Sounds like a heck of a day fishing. Capt stated that one was 2600 lbs

Seems there’s evidence that great whites over-winter off the SC coast…if you go to OSEARCH’s website, it seems there’s always several GW just off the SC coast

I’m a little worried to get in our water with all these beasties out there. I’d love to see one though.

That ocearch website is really interesting. Thanks for sharing.

I could careless if we had no Great Whites off our coast, but all this tagging and conservation efforts with them may be getting attention they doesn’t need. I know several now going in search of them. I know they are not allowed to be kept, but I’m sure there will be casualties from them being targeted and brought boat side.

Guess I would like to know stomach contents. Guessing Bull Spot tail and maybe a Dolphin or two?

The article following the GW catchings showed a dead pigmy sperm whale being buried on the beach. Only research or actual feeding activity being witnessed will tell us what they are up to.

I would like to know how many males were caught. Maybe HHI is a GW dating zone for GWs. What freaks me is that the GWs are so near shore. I am interested to see what they are feeding on. That migration from up north gots to make them hungry and no seals around here.

Near shore… Make that In shore. Pinged off Morgan Island and in the Charleston Harbor.

Taylor Horton is an old friend’s son. I didn’t know he was that crazy. Really good young man.

Woohoo! Box full!!! When is the cookout?!?!?

You guys are behind the times, one of the oldest recorded shark attack deaths in history was not offshore, but right in Charleston Harbor in 1840. See the notes:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal,_unprovoked_shark_attacks_in_the_United_States

Killed while treading water awaiting rescue after being accidentally thrown overboard in Charleston Harbor, Charleston County, South Carolina. Witnesses estimated the shark to be 25 feet (8 m) long

Does that mean you do care some?

Best friend’s daughter was thinking about marine biology with an interest in sharks so he chartered this guy a couple of years ago in the late summer. Cool dude and he had some great stories about teh Great Whites and the big Tigers and Hammerheads he has caught right in the inlet (where we were fishing). We eneded up catching about 4-5 sharks with a Tiger that went about 250-300 and some big lemons. He said he has caught several Tigers that went over 1000lbs right there in the inlet as well a a few Hammers! Does make you think twice before going in the water, especially around bait or if you are bleeding!!

I was thinking about this when we started. Is posting our catches worth putting this fish at risk? The benefit is, we’re attaching the latest technology of tags and getting samples from the first white sharks south of NY. There’s zero data or any understanding what they’re doing here. It’s also very beneficial to business and tourism. We’re finally getting known for something besides golf and timeshares. The drawback is, we’re now getting attention from outside organizations like Ocearch that make a fortune off our resources. They’ve had fatalities in the past and have been kicked out of areas/countries/states without changing methods. Dr Domeier said it best when he walked away “you guys are going to kill one and I have to stay here and clean up the mess while you move on to the next spot.” The hauling of 2-3 thousand pound sharks out of the water is for show, you can accomplish the same data leaving the fish in the water which has a 100% survival rate. But it doesn’t sell papers or clicks seeing it boatside. I’m definitely concerned when they’re here. They kill one here, we’re screwed.

Your guess was correct about the dolphin. 2 years ago we had a 14 footer barf up half a dolphin next to the boat.

Maybe just a tinsy bit. I’ve always loved to take a dive in the water to cool off when offshore fishing. After Mary Lee I don’t do that any more. We were all group tubing in Whale Branch this summer and I got creeped out.

Thanks for that reply and info Outcast, also Fred is right, if I remember right that large GW in the harbor a few years ago pinged up in Beresford creek. I’m rethinking my swimming habits too.

There is an island off the coast of Ga somewhere where there is a seal colony. Scientists have already tracked the White sharks to there from up north.
