70 hp johnson 2 stroke problem

I have a 1988 70 hp 2 stroke and all of a sudden one day when I was riding it cuts out. It will crank and idle for a few minutes then cut off but will crank back up and idle for a few minutes and cut off. I switched the gas because thought it might of been a fuel issue then ran it and it ran for a little while but seemed slightly slower and sounded a little different and then cut off. Any ideas or suggestions would be great.

Check the fuel pump…then check the ignition

crank it up, then unplug the big red plug for the wiring harness
if it stays running, u have a boat problem
if it still shuts off, then you know you have a motor issue
