8/1 Black Drum

Decided to go fishing again today despite the rain, but I managed to catch a few. Caught one on a jig head on shrimp and another I fouled hooked. I tried for sheepshead and had all the right gear but could not bring them to the dock. I hooked one and it spit the hook when it got right to the dock. I was using an owner 1/0 hook to the braided line with a splitshot a few inches above. Am I doing something wrong?

Sheepshead are finicky at times. We use 20 lb 18" flouro leader between the braid and hook. Capt Ed once told me the trick is to set the hook right before they bite.

Go as light on the weight as you can to maintain vertical fishing. Carolina rig setup. Your hook is correct, that’s what we use.

For bait, fiddlers, oysters, muscles, clams, live shrimp. The fresher the bait, the better. Sometimes they prefer one over the other, and sometimes they’ll eat anything. Sometimes they won’t bite at all.

Good luck.

So set the hook before the bite…now that is impressive.

Happens to us all, sometimes they were never hooked; the hook was just lodged in a corner of their bony mouth. I try to never get their head out of the water, or they will spit the hook for sure. Putting net below fish and raising up to net prevents knocking the hook out of their mouth. I’m still averaging about 6 fiddlers to 1 SH landed.

Also might add in the fact that you might feel like a fool at times. Still to this day I think I feel the slightest added weight to my line and swiftly set the hook only to have the rig sky rocket out of the water and nearly hit me in the head. Gotta love it. Early November they’ll be more aggressive on the bite which helps you learn the bite. At that time move to areas as close to the ocean as you can (within a few miles).

Right now, I am averaging “ALL” of my fiddler crabs, for “NONE” of the sheeps lol.
