8/14 trout bite

I took off from work this morning to fish with my son one more time before he leaves for college this weekend. We went to an area that is new to us and caught last part of incoming and the fist bit of outgoing tide. He started with a grub and I went for the top-water. Things started a little slow as we worked our way along a bank, but we picked up them as we went along and both had 3 trout each in the first hour. Rain had moved through the area before we arrived, but the cloud cover stayed with us until about 9:00am. I was steady getting blow ups and some hook ups, but lots of misses. At 9:00 when the sun came out I told Jacob, that I thought the top-water bite was pretty much done, but made another cast and caught a really nice big girl in the 20" range, did not take time to measure her just got her back in the water as quickly as possible. The first part of the sun showing actually turned the top-water bite on and we caught several more fish. I lost count and really don’t normally keep a very accurate count, but would say we caught about 20 fish most of them small a couple of micro and a few in the 16-18" range. Fish started out right on the grass at high tide and we had to work the baits very slow almost like winter fishing. I would cast and let the bait sit until all of the ripples dissipated and then twitch it and stop and they would hit it on the first rest just about every time. Saw lot of people moving around trying to find fish. One guy went by as at least 6 times jumping back and forth between spots, not sure if he did any good or not. We like the conditions we were fishing and our patience paid off.

Well done sir, “20 something” fish days are what it’s about! Some good memories made… Thanks for sharing

No better reason for taking off work than to go fishing with your son. Making memories is what it’s all about…and you get an A+ for that. You caught some nice fish and had a great time. What more could anyone want?

Thanks guys. Yes Harold we have had many great trips together over the years and made many memories. I’ve also tried to impart some of my limited wisdom about life on each of those trips. I am thankful that we’ve had so many opportunities afforded us and that at 18 years old he still wants to go fishing with his old man.

The fact that he still wants to go fishing with you is proof positive that you’ve done a good job as a parent. Congrats!

You still got it, man! And congrats to your son and you (regarding college; the fishing’s just the gravy on top…:sunglasses:)
