8/4 Bottom Fish and Diving

Left the dock at 8 after a 1 hr nap from working at the bar all night so felt like poooo to start the day. Bumpy ocean nearshore and then layed down VERY nice in 70 ft on out. I was extremely happy and surprise with out pleasant it actually was. Bottom fished first and got limit of big fat sea bass. Then Louie and Kevin did a dive and produced 2 cobia going 25 and 35 lbs on boga. I dove a spot and did work on the gags. We fished for a bit and caught a mess of triggers and then the front started to get close. They went down for another day with almost no vis and managed a few nice flounder and a ling (northern fish). That front came in nasty and very quick. After that dive we called the day and came in. Very relaxing and fun day with a nice mixed box as an end result. Vis was 15 ft today with cool thermocline and very dark water. Nice saturday to enjoy the ocean

I am hella-jealous. I want to try spear fishing so bad. Very nice meat run, those are some fatty BSB’s.

Awesome day!! Tried to get you on the radio a few times. Thats a southern hake or a spotted hake not sure, related to cod (Gadiformes). Eat that bad boy up could be good never had one!!

Looks like a mudfish!

nice catch charles, we hailed you several times on the radio, had a diver in the water when the storm blew by, got very exciting!

If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.

Looks like a Southern Hake.

Ling or hake, I see them all the time and figured they were some type of trash fish. They any good to eat?

Set the trap boys, we going to pass through them again!!

It does look just like a lingcod, a fish we were catching in Alaska when fishing for halibut. Aren’t ling what Texans call cobia?

The skin was really soft and buttery and thats usually a good sign. Kinda weird when i cleaned with…harder for knife to cut than normal but very nice filets. Louie Costa can tell us how it ate, but i can guess it was good

Looks like a Ling Cod! They eat real well!Solid white meat filets!

What ever it is there are more of them down there. Most I have seen were smaller. I always thought they were some type of lizard fish.

Set the trap boys, we going to pass through them again!!

Nice catch by the way!!!

Yes, in TX cobia = ling.

If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.

That is a Hake, taste like a soft cod fillet
