Fist deer came out at 5:45 PM. He was a monster. Of course I was looking in opposite direction and when I turned around he was slowly walking away. No chance.
A doe doe showed up about 6:30. Then the 8 pointer came out about 6:45. He was facing left. I shot and he leaped forward and fell down. He jumped up and ran back to where he came from. Could not find any blood. Called a buddy and we tracked and found tiny drops of blood and slowly trace the blood until it ran out. I decided to walk towards the water as wounded deer almost always seem to head towards water. I still could not find him and told my buddy that we should come back in the morning. I turned to my right and he was alyin within 15’. Shot was a little low and did not come out the other side. Hit his shoulder. He only went about 70 yards. Lesson learned that lack of blood does not mean the deer in not mortally wounded. I was so tired that Totally fogot to take a picture. He was 150# basket 8. His stomach was really full and he stunk already.
Oh, I hunted by my white oaks. Acorns are down everywhere. Had no corn out at this location

I went back this morning to put out a camera and decided to count the markers I put out next to every drop of blood we found. There were a total of 17 drops. Most were tiny. A couple were decent. The distance was closer to 50 yards. My guess is the bullet hit his shoulder and spred internally without leaving much blood to come out of the tiny entry point.

Good deal on shooting and finding that buck.Do you think that you messed up your chances of shooting the monster by killing the smaller buck?Back when I would treesit some ,I often wondered if shooting a doe would ruin my stand for awhile.Maybe some of the bigger stillhunters will weigh in on this?I shoot a 270 also but only out of the truck window nowadays.haha P.S. Go ahead and post the picture,no one on here would even think about making fun of it

Same here. Was using a 150 grain, but have dropped to a 130. Good old cheap core locks.
we had some backstrap on the grill last night. Grandkids love it. We’ve been eating a lot more venison since I’ve been watching my cholesterol a little more these days.

If it’s under 180# and less than a 8pt of course there will be some on here that will say it’s too small and not worthy…
sman, I’ve shot a buck and had another larger come out and sniff the dead one… Have killed deer in the morning and returned to the same stand in the evening and killed deer… I don’t think it ruins your chance much. It’s all about going often and in a good spot. I’ve got one stand that sits in a woods barrier between two fields. I’ve shot a deer in one field and 5 min later shot another one in the other field. Deer are smart from natural selection and genetic survival instincts, but not that smart.
I hink the big guy was long gone when I shot. Hell dragging that stinky buck through the woods may help
