9/20

Got out about 10am, Mullet were busting all over the place on SI point, very close to the rocks below the houses. It gets pretty shallow there but loaded up with some of the biggest Mullet Ive seen. Some of them were bigger than Trout Ive caught.
Went out again looking for Tarpon, cruised around looking for any signs. Was surprised I didn’t see anything as baitfish was everywhere, gulls and pelicans hitting them everywhere. Fished a few spots, one float, one on the bottom and one freelined. Nothing at all, until I cut one up and got several Blues. Nothing else to report, oh, i lost my anchor. Had to cut the rope, it was getting a bit dodgy trying to use the boat to free it with the waves, so decided discretion is better than valor in this case.

Nice report

Thanks for sharing. Even if nothing overly exciting, I still have fun reading about others’ days on the water when I’m not out.

Wise decision on the anchor. Pretty bluefish.

I lost my only anchor last week poon fishing. Nearly swamped my boat trying to yank it loose. Poon fishing seems dangerous

What happened with that hatch being so rusty ?

Not sure on how much you like fish for table fair, but the larger mullet if cooked the same day caught are pretty good pan fried whole. When cleaning make sure to remove the Black layer in the stomach cavity. My Dad would catch them with a very small gold hook and a tiny piece of worm.

I heard some rave reviews of them smoked while in Biloxi, but never tried em that way.

Before tying on a new anchor , rig it to break away when hung up , one rigged to do so is seldom lost , also never try to pull one free using the stern to pull from unless you want to lose your ride also…

Hey

So it looks like rust but it is goop from a tree, I took my cover off before the storm, and as you can see it got dirty. It cleaned up good though.

I didn’t realize you could eat mullet, I may give that a shot tomorrow if I get some more of the big ones.

I had the anchor rode on a side cleat, trying to get a different angle, and where I was fishing the waves were coming thru a gap pretty good. I have read about not doing that from the stern.

Thanks for the breakaway idea on the anchor, as long as I don’t lose it tomorrow I will rig it that way when I get home!

Cheers , good luck anyone going out tomorrow.

I had a bunch of big mullet Sunday am, but ended up using them up on bait.
Not traveling for work this week so hope to get out a couple of mornings and will try a Mullet.
