Purpose One’s charter called him at the last minute to cancel today’s charter because of a family emergency. He decided that we’d go try some new-ish areas and techniques ourselves. Something was said about a gag grouper junkie needing his fix…
We left early…
Stopped in 75-90’ to check out some stuff we’d run over before. Sun wasn’t up, so we caught some verbillion deck slappers to beat the boredom.
After a very strong sunrise bite complete with hungry gags, we started catching fish that we could no longer keep…
and some we did not want to keep anyway.
So we went out deeper to check out a few spots that might be harboring something other than illegals or aliens.
First spot looked like this
Tough luck. A solid wad of verbillion deck slappers there. Had to go elsewhere, but not far.
Got some more grouper and headed back in to try our luck at the seabass. This beat the boredom very well like the verbillions had before light.
We caught most of the fish on squid and live bait. In all, we threw back (after proper venting of course) verbillions, triggers, 2 or 3 gags, a tail pincher red snapper, a couple sharks, a lion fish, greater/lesser/in-between jacks, grunts, + more.
It was a good day. Worth missing football for. Worth missing hunting for.
For seriously- the grouper bit slow today after very early morning. Even the scamp were sluggish. Had to adjust to that… they sucked it in and sat there. Not much current today, and the wind laid down when the sun came up. Heard talk on the vhf of some nice wahoo being put in somebody’s box. Didn’t hear much on the sailfish.
Also saw an 8’ wide ray s
Red Bull, it laid down more and more throughout the day. Coming into the jetties at 4PM, it had spread out pretty nice. Nothing much over 2’ all day though.
