Going out to Pitt st tonight or after work for some fishing if anyone wants to come. Should be able to catch some bait for us. 843-260-1288
So how’de you do?
“Oh, de flounder he looks so fine, hanging onto my little thin line…”
Caught two lady fish… Awesome fight! lost something big. I was using 3-4inch bait caught. Might need to go down in size. But smaller bait seems harder for me to catch

There can be a lot of bonnetheads around there, if it felt like it was in that size range. Some big reds occasionally as well.

Went back and caught a bonnet and another lady fish. Is bonnet actually good to eat? I’ve heard that and im tired of not bringing dinner home… Do you have to bleed them out or anything? If so how do you do that

I hear that Bonnets are amazing. Just have to gut them and bleed them asap. If not, when they die, their urine will secrete into their meat…Bad deal.
Best to do a little research online and develop a plan (especially from a kayak).

There are some YouTube videos that show you how to bleed sharks out. When in doubt, I YouTube.
I agree with this statement, although I’ve caught a 35 inch red on the NWS on a 2 inch mud minnow and a 25 inch red on a mud minnow less than 2 inches, both on carolina rigs.
As far as the sharks are concerned, I haven’t kept one but many people say they’re good. Capt Dave gave me some good tips. After you catch it you want to hit it in the head with a hammer to make sure its dead then immediately gut it. Pinkfisher is correct on the youtube videos cause I watched a few and they show it in detail. Some people say cut off the head and others say keep it on incase DNR wants to verify the speciies of shark. After gutting it then put it on ice and fillet it asap and soak the fillets in butter milk. After that most people marinade and/or fry it.

FOr sharks, you can’t go wrong with the oak plank method:
-
Bleed it, behead it, filet it, soak it etc
-
Marinate the filets with your favorite seasons and spices.
-
Get an oak plank.
-
Start grill (Charcoal), and get coals just right.
-
Cook Shark on oak plank until the meat is flaky.
-
When it is done, throw away the shark and eat the plank!!

I bet thats one good tasting plank
Went out yesterday and caught a nice flounder 15 inches. It will make a great dinner!

Bonnetheads are great eating! The last one I caught was in the Stono. I saw the fin, lobbed a big ol shrimp on a float in front of it and had a good fight bringing it in. I had a crappy folding net that snapped when I tried to lift it into the boat. Not keen on the idea of an uncontrolled shark in the yak with me, I towed it 3/4 mile into the landing, paddling with one hand and holding the rod with the other.
I simply cut off the head and hold it upside down til it bleeds out, then gut it and put it on ice. I’ve never soaked the meat in buttermilk.
Note: when you bleed that shark, you’re putting a lot of blood in the water where you know there are sharks. I wouldn’t dangle your feet over the side…
I had to re-read the plank post a few times to get the joke!
Thanks for the tip! I def understand the shark in the boat issue. haha. Next time I catch one I will make some steaks! Thanks for y’als help!!! One question, does DNR have any issue with a headless shark? I thought I remembered reading somewhere about that wiht other species…
Yea the plank joke… You just got to love some of the helpful people on here. Sometimes it makes me question if they are transplants, because where I am from, we will help a stranger.(Darlington) And why didnt they listen to their mother, if you dont have anything helpful to say, then dont say anything at all Though I must give him credit, he was less A**hole about it than most(Not really one at all) and did have a nice little joke. It made me smile vrs think negatively about another none helpful member on here.
On a side note, I did find a really helpful guy on the water last night. Didnt catch anything, but 6 empty budlights. I had my flounder giging light standing up in the kayak for light. I was watching some giggers walk across the way and noticed a boat come in to our area, the boat had no destination and was just turning around in different ways. The wad giggers evidently didnt like it, got scrared or doing something illegal because they scat A** and ran up between two houses. I didnt know what he was doing. Figured it was kids or something. He started to spot lighting the houses and around where they went in and turned towards us. It ended up being a DNR officer, very nice fella. He said he could see me from across the harbor lol. Had some great tips and places to lead me in the right direction for the saltwater fishes. We laughed about the giggers, shared some stories and went on our way. Then met a Mount pleasant officer putting my kayaks up, he to was nice as all get out and gave me some dove and duck hunting areas close my new town. Nedless to say it was a good night, minus the no fish issue

I’ll go out on a limb and venture to guess there are at least 2 or possibly even three non transplants on the board who would have the temerity to respond as dolphind did

I thought someone else would chime in on this question… I’ve never had DNR approach me while on the water so I don’t know what the response would be to a headless shark. I keep the whole thing to be safe.
I have always heard best to leave the head on for positive identification. No need to cause any trouble for yourself. You can still bleed him out without beheading him.
