Had a chance to slip in the stand yesterday afternoon. Wind was not blowing the ideal direction from this stand, but it was what it was. Climbed in stand at 6:20. At 6:25 had 2 does come in from across a ditch in front of me. Came straight to corn 15 yds away from me (bow hunting). Older doe was less than satisfied every time breeze would come through. She would spook then come back over and over again for about 5 minutes. I thought hunt was over at this point.
Watched these two for a couple minutes when I noticed a deer walking from my left to right about 100 yds away on a power line. The grass and bushes are grown up pretty thick around that area, so it was hard to see exactly what it was. Deer entered a clearing where I could get a better view…doe. Another deer came behind her…doe. And another doe. Looked behind that last one and could tell there was another deer with a larger body. Saw horns.
The does came in pretty quick straight towards me. He was the last to get there, chasing the last doe pretty hard around the area. I knew now I was at the mercy of what she was going to do. She eased towards corn, and he followed. As soon as he got close to her, she jumped in a deep ditch, and up the other side. I drew string back and waited for him to turn broadside. He started to jump in that same ditch when I made a noise to stop him. Let the arrow fly. Ran about 40 yds before he died…6 pt 165 lbs exactly according to scale at processor.
