Grouper spelled with two OO’s like sellsfish asked for indicates small grouper that can be electramated up so fast that their eyes become two O O 's.
If you want grouper numbers, then you must prove yourself with grOOper first. Otherwise, you would just be going to a good grouper spot and bumbling it all up where they’ll be leader shy when I get back out there.
I learned with a chart, compass, good watch, rpm/speed table, depth flasher, and an AM portable radio. Later, RDF was the big deal followed by Loran. GPS is a heck of a tool.
Most on here have no idea about the AM radio. Point the antenna towards the hill and find the strong signal. Sometimes come in to Georgetown…sometimes Edisto. Those were the days. One old retired Snapper boat Capt. told me about using a sash weight with a piece of parafin on the end. drop it down, come up with sand…keep driving, come up with coral, seaweed…start fishing. The funniest thing he ever told me was that back in 47’ they didn’t think Red Snapper grew any SMALLER than 30 lbs. They sure had a set of coconuts to go out that far back then.

I hear a number of guys talk about the old soap and rope bottom finding days… run 32 minutes at a compass heading…stop, drop the soap and keep working the area till you pulled up bits of coral and/or sponge…
also heard some good stories about training missions with a PBY in the 40’s… you could see the hard bottom from the air… they would land and handline from the rafts… good times
Them fellas used to bring back grouper and red snappa like we could catch C bass now.
Heard many stories about my Gdad getting on the fish and continuing to fish the spot until they filled the bote deck with fish and had to quit because they were flopping out. Then, called up some other buddies to help when the bote trailer axle broke from the load on the way home…
This is why we are dropping bate on 150’ now instead of 40’.
WTMA antenna downtown. Tune in, get a heading, run awhile, tune in, and correct heading. Run until you saw Morris Island light, correct to intercept the shipping channel couple miles out from the end of the Jetties, turn in and go home.
Going out was the trick, heading, speed, and when you hit the depth watch that flasher real well. Drop a marker, go around in a pattern, make a few test drops and throw out the other marker. Then fish. If trolling, hit the desired depth and troll a good heading.
I am a little jealous, my cousin is captaining a 44 hour charter south of the elbow on the 40 fathom break and deeper this weekend. Hand cranks and power pro. That would be a fun trip. If I did not have charters this weekend I would be going. There are some gags down there that I owe a good whoopin on. The Tortugas whoop me on warsaws with bandits, need some get back there also.
