90’ fishing techniques live bottom/reefs

Hoping to go out a little farther than the 60 on buddies new boat. I have live bottom jigs and plan to use live bait and squid as well. I have heard bottom bumping on here a lot. My question is how do ya’ll do it. I have heard grouper on bottom and snapper would be a few feet above bottom… amberjacks higher than that. Should I actually bump bottom with jigs or bump bottom reel up and work it there. Second question, anyone catching dolphin in 125-150’ of water? We plan to look for some weed lines within 15 miles of Comanche, are we wasting our time?? Thanks in advance for any help

Chicken rigs and cut bait. Learn to tie your own. I prefer a 6/0 or 5/0 VMC circle hook, the thinner gauge increases hook ups.

Grouper = live bait or jigs from an anchored boat over the right structure. Carolina rigs or a 3 way rig with floro leader

Bliners typically suspend off the bottom. Slow pitch jigs and rods are fun. Coltsniper jigs are great. A 6oz Spro with a hunk of meat on it will catch a lot, only drawback is the hooks are brittle.

You drop butterflies jigs on a piece of bottom with AJ’s you’re going to catch all you want.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Salty is pretty much on point. If you want to catch some BSB and porgies and some other bottom dwellers which are tasty drop some cut bait to the bottom and reel up a few feet. You’ll hook some bliners, porgies, grunts (grouper & cobia bait), some triggers. This is also a good way to catch some live bait to drop down for groupers.
As far as Mahi we hooked 1 in 95ft a few weeks ago slow trolling for kings. They are around but scattered. They will be the smaller ones typically.
Good luck out there.

Often this time of year schools of small peanut dolphin will swim by your boat while you are bottom fishing. Keep a rod handy to pitch a bait to them. If they don’t want take an artificial, take the sinker off of a chicken rig and float some squid or cut bait to the school.
