95 Evinrude Electrical Problem

I know I have a short somewhere in the ignition where the motor will turn over but not fire by the key. If I unplug the main wiring harness and jump the motor from the starter to solenoid it will run perfectly.

I now have no power to the key, trim and tilt switch at the throttle, or the trim and tilt switch at the side of the motor. I can still take the wiring harness loose at the red plug and crank the motor, but I have no power now to the key or the trim.

Do yall think the switch has gone completely out now and this is affecting the tilt, or is this two different issues?

Thanks
Brandon

Try looking at/any fuse links.

Double D.

There is a fuse connector on port side of engine.

If it has a kill switch. unplug it then retry. IF it has the key switch with the integral kill switch(has the red clip that holds the ignition switch in), the switch is probably bad(I’ve replaced a bunch. Hanckle keeps them in stock and about half the price of Seels

I have the feeling the key switch is bad. I will check the fuses as well. Let you know what I come up with.

What hp?

I have a 1995 88spl that did the same thing… at least, had the same symptoms. It turned out to be a bad ground on the block. On my motor, there was(is) a ground connection directly to the block on the same side of the motor as the starter. That ring connector and several inches of the wire connected to it were pretty badly corroded. It was buried under a mass of wires and took a while to find with a VOM. But, once found, I cut back until I had bright shiny wire, spliced in some new wire with water proof crimp butt connectors and attached a new ring connector on the end. 'Wire brushed the side of the block clean/bright where it attached and re-attached the ground. Everything then got a good coat of black paint. Motor spun about 1/2 a revolution and fired up. That was a couple of years back and so far, all’s good.

I had a blown fuse, which remedied the trim problem. I still have a short somewhere in the ignition system which will either make the motor miss badly or just not fire at all sometimes. I think I will start with a new key switch and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestion on the fuse.

do you have a tach with the lights on the bottom?
