'96 Honda 4 Stroke advise

I re-bought my old 96 Scout 16’ with the Honda 50 4 stroke on it back from my sister-in-law recently. It is my understanding that the boat has not been run in 4-5 years. I will assume none of fluids have been changed and whatever gas was in it years ago when I sold it to her is still there. That 50 never really pushed that boat very well to begin with but due to the weight of them in 1996 that is what they put on the back. Question is this: do you think it is worth attempting to change hoses, fluids, filters, plugs and whatever else needs to be done along with removing and replacing the fuel or not? Years ago when I had the boat, I often thought about looking for a used 75-90 2 stroke to put on it. Is there a market out there to trade in a used Honda for a used slightly bigger motor?

Chris V - If you read this you may remember this boat, although you’ve probably seen 17 more like it since 2006 or 2007.

I know money will fix all these problems, I would simply like to aim for the best bang for my buck(s).

Thanks in advance for your help.

no issue with fixing that motor
you most likely will need teh carbs cleaned

I have a 97 50 with more than 2900 hours on it. I am very happy with it once I figured it out. Never run it without the foot in water, I use a plastic barrel to flush it. I drain the carbs after every run, I hooked up the float bowl drains together and then out next to the pee hole. I always have to clean the pee tube, it gets clogged constantly but it is not that hard to run some leader wire up it real quick. I get great service out of the Honda, dont trade for something else, the Hondas are my favorite engine.

thanks for the responses. I think I’ll start looking into this after the first of the year. Chris, I will most likely be in touch.

If you remove the pee hose from the plastic fitting that goes through
The cowling, then remove plastic fitting and let the hose stick out the hole
You clog issues will go away

Have a 97, 50 honda 4500 hours and has been ran hard, I have never been inside the block and have minimal normal maintence.Great engine.

Now she does clog fairly easily, I run very shallow often, I fashioned a tool for this which I keep in my tackle bag. Take a double 500# swivel and cut the loop part of one end leaving it straight, this is the part that cleans out the tube. Works great and is hard to lose.
