Cousin and I fished this morning and at a little over half throttle the motor ('96 mercury 20hp tiller steer) would rev up on its own, but not gain forward speed. It actually started to loose speed, like when you burn out on wet pavement in a car. Got it back to the house and did a quick google search and thought it might be a spun hub on the prop. Took the prop of and ran it with just the shaft exposed and it did the same thing… pulled the carb and cleaned it just to be safe and it was fine… the issue is very consistent… in water or out of water… prop on, or prop off… any thoughts?

No, it stays in gear and the shaft keeps spinning… One thing that we did try to push the choke and it throttles back down…

Took the prop to Skips Prop in North Charleston and he pressed out the hub and put a new one in. Put the boat in the water and it ran like a top. Thanks Skip!!!
