A couple of more from Hatteras in the 50's

First pic is of “Hadeco” the freight boat that brought most of our supplies over from the mainland in those days. The second two are what is now Teach’s Lair Marina long before anybody ever thought of builiding a marina in the village and the last one is a picture of Capt. Ernal Foster’s boat “Albatross I” when she was built in the 30’s - she was the original charter boat that ran out of Hatteras and is still running 80 years later.

I love the caption with the clams. How many people today would work like that, not alone being crippled by polio??

Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught.

and those clams probably came from the old village clam bed that was across Hatteras Inlet behind Ocracoke Island (where the ferry dock is now) - about a four mile trip in a wooden skiff with a single surf boat oar. I’d like to see somebody today head out across Hatteras Inlet in a row boat with a single oar. Lennus didn’t weigh 125# soaking wet and was crippled from the polio to the point where he used home made crutches to get around all his life. We used to get a .02 a piece for those clams at Odens Dock so he probably had $8.00 worth of clams there for the whole days work.
My, how things have changed!

Great pictures. One of the Albatross boats was at Spencer this spring. Neat boats with a lot of history.

Love the pictures. It brings back some memories of my own from thirty years ago. If it works here are two pictures from the fish house there at Teach’s Lair Marina. The pound net fisherman were bringing in their catch. I think the pictures were from October 1980.
