A day of firsts, and a day of gratitude.

Like all here, I’m always watching the weather. This week looks to be one of the best so far this year. Can’t make it out Tuesday, but Wednesday will work.
I was a little hesitant about going. I’m fairly green, only trolled on my boat a handful of times with no luck putting fish in the boat. My experienced crew is in training and no way they can get off! I haven’t been all year due to training myself. I start shooting some texts out to people I know can catch fish. No one is available! One friend that couldn’t go says “you can’t catch them from the couch.” That does it. I’m going! I text my 2 friends that can go and tell em I can’t guarantee fish, but we will have a good safe time none the less.

QUACK!!QUACK!!!(iPhone alarm goes off) it’s 0130. Time to get up and leave Chapin! Frank meets me at the house at 0200 for his first trip offshore. We head to pick up Wes after the GPS takes us the wrong way and we get lost in suburbia hell!! We are on the one lane I26 headed to Charleston.

Grab ice on ladson road and to Remleys we go. Fell in behind a beautiful yellow Classic SeaCraft 23 to the landing. Figured while we were waiting to put in the water I could compliment him. Didn’t get to tell him how much I liked his ride, by the time I had the drain plug in and those bada$$ Marsh Tacky Carbon outriggers in the mounts they were gone. Y’all that do this all the time are fast!!! On the water we go! Headed looking for some Carolina gold!

It was a good ride out. We ran from 28-36 mph the whole way out. Got to 150’ and see boats trolling, figured we’d get lines in the water and hit the rips and ease our way out deeper.

Thanks for the report – good job!

I have no idea how you didn’t catch that treble with the fish wrapped around you like that! Also the business end of that gaff isn’t in a friendly place! [:0] That whole picture makes me anxious!

Now that is a report. Thanks guys and congrats on all the firsts. Ocean looked like a lake from the pictures.

If you are ever looking for an extra let me know. Always interested in going and happy to split costs/bring gear.

Good friends having a great day on the big blue. That’s what it’s all about. And people wonder why we can’t sleep the night before an offshore trip…

I agree this should/could have been handled better. This picture makes me cringe too.

Wonderful read, and great day on the water! Sounds like y’all had a blast!

(On a side note, if you ever want company, I’m off about 2 days, on average, during the week. I’d be more than happy to help chip in if you ever need mate.) It’s hard to find folks during the week; I’m often in the same (proverbial) boat.

Retired and living on Edisto - lots of offshore experience and some first-class tackle. Let me know.

thanks for the report and details, glad to see some boats got out this week.

Nice report and congrats to all the “first”. Just a thought on your planer: #24 is real large for a in-line planer. we use #8 as you can keep your drag light. If you use a 24 you may want to pull it on a handline or downrigger and use a rubberband and paperclip release. That being said your trip was a success and congrats

Thanks for the thoughts Chaos! I have a couple #8’s and will try that. Would it make sense that I think the line was bound up on the reel? I can’t even find the end of the braid where it popped. I had it spoiled at a shop, so I’m not sure. It popped at the reel, not at any of my connections. Which makes me feel kinda good. My knots and crimps held!

Good job Jason and congratulations on all the first. Offshore is awesome and even better when its your own boat. So what if we are the mosquito fleet. Catching fish is catching fish. Hate I missed it. Guess I should get my priorities straight. Keep me on your list.
