My oldest son and I came down for our first attempt at kayak fishing. I didn’t say it to him but I really did not figure on catching anything as we were totally new to this concept of fishing. MY son caught us a bunch of MM while I readied our gear at the landing and off we went. We fished a couple of areas and then much to my surprise I had a bite. It was a flounder, but it was only 13.5" so back it went. This was my first fish ever on artificial bait, a pearly white gulp shrimp on a Carolina rig. No sooner than I had cleared my line when my son shouted that he had something on his line. It turned out to be a really nice 24" redfish, his first redfish ever. He was using a MM on a jighead. We did not catch another fish all day but we really had a great time. My son thanked me several times on the way home and said what a good time he had. That makes for a great day in my book.
Awesome!!! borrowed a yak from Russ one day and had a great trip or two paddling around…but think fishing would be a real challenge…esp. since Roo insisted on going with me one trip…I can see us both swimming for the hill!!! Congrats on the fish and on a great day with your son!

Thanks all for the kind words. I have learned so much from all of the good folks at CF and I have made some good friends. Russ, it was great meeting you yesterday and I wanted to thank you again for the kayak life jacket, it will be a lot more comfortable than the one he was wearing. Man, the folks here on CF are first rate!
DFreedom…very nice post!

I remember my first fish caught purposely on a artificial lure, ever since then I use artificial stuff 80% of the time. I love how it feels when the fish hits it, knowing that you tricked the fish.
“In every species of fish I’ve angled for, it is the ones that have got away that thrill me the most, the ones that keep fresh in my memory. So I say it is good to lose fish. If we didn’t, much of the thrill of angling would be gone.” Ray Bergman

thanks for the nice post
DF - That’s a Daymaker for both of you. Nothing like the look on your son’s face when he hooks that redfish.
