A few more from my old archives of Hatteras in the 50’s and before. Not much changed on the island for 150 years until the 60’s when they built the Bonner Bridge. The development over last 50 years has completely changed the lives of the local families. (for the better and the worse I guess)
The first one is an old picture of wreckage that washed up on the beach after a storm in 1899 - alot of the wood and supplies for the village came from ship wrecks that washed up on the beach after storms. Many of the old homes are built with salvaged ship timbers that washed up on the beach. The boat with the car on it was really the first ferry and the other ferry shot is later when Toby Tillet ran his ferry across the inlet and sound. (Prior to the state of NC starting a ferry operation) The water tank was our new fresh water tank at the house- it gathered rain water from the gutters and stored the fresh water for the house. (fresh water was a valuable commodity back then) The big diesel generator supplied power for the ice house and most of the homes that had electricity in the Village (Hatteras Electric Company) It was privately owned by the family that owned the ice house. Ice was $4.50 a ton at the dock at that time (you can hardly buy a 20# bag for that now) The Hatteras to Manteo Bus line was my ticket out into the world back in 68’ when I left home. One more of the Village main street in the mid 50’s and another CG surf boat with the long oars ready to go.
