A first for me

Was out fishing for topwater trout this morning.
Got lots of action, so tied on a chartreuse deer hair muddler and chucked it out there…

1 strip and hooked up with this little guy. My first topwater fish OTF

Had another trout doing somersaults trying to get it, but just couldn’t get a hook to set…

Very nice!!

Cool. As we all say, catching them on a fly is the most fun way but on top is the best of all!

What’s you strategy for top water trout? Are you fishing alongside grassy edges? at high tide? Just trying to figure out what angle to work and where to cast…

Flyhound - Try topwater in the early morning in places where trout usually hang out… structure, moving water, ambush points, places where bait gets trapped, etc. Bring the plug with the current if possible. I’m what you might call an “opportunistic” fly fisherman. I will bring the flyrod but usually only use it when I can see the fish (i.e. grass or low tide flats) or when I am on a bite. This day I was chucking topwater plugs with a bait caster and getting a lot of hits, so I switched up to the flyrod…
