A fish story

Went out in the kayak this morning fishing some docks in the Old Village. Saw a few reds hanging out under the docks but I’d always spook them before I could even cast a line. I need more discipline… Had a chunk of menhaden on a carolina rig while working the trout trick along a drop off. About to call it a day when my rod with cut bait goes screeeaammming out behind me. That fish took off and did not slow down for a solid minute and almost spooled me on a 3500 reel! He finally slows down enough for me to get my other line in and pull the anchor pin up. The fish starts dragging me out into the Mt. Pleasant Channel and I immediately realize I made a mistake by unanchoring. Before long, a boat comes hauling through and, despite my whistle and wave, drives right over my line which snags, spools and pops. Very, very frustrating. It was probably just a massive stingray but for now I’m calling it the state record spot tail.

To the guy that crossed my line, sorry if you’re prop is tangled up, but next time please slow down when passing 20 yards from a kayaker with a rod doubled over.

Thankfully, the TT saved me from a skunk with a 14’’ trout right before the the this incident.

Heart breaker! I can’t stand people in boats that feel the need to come right up to paddlers… Happens a lot!

I try to keep my distance from kayak’s, and if I can’t then i slow down. Just common courtesy that I’ve picked up from growning up on the water. Nice job on the trout though.

to everybody in a powerboat either stay on plane fat away, or idle speed if too close (50 to 100 yards), don’t get off plane right in front of the boat, that puts an even larger wake up. And if you wakeboard next to my yak, your getting cussed out, period.
To everybody in a yak, don’t be surprised or angry if somebody wakes you if your anchored inside a bend or by deep water. And try to hide your anger, if you flip some jack*** off they might go by you a few more times at full speed. I know from experience!

Maybe carrying some of those launch flares with you will help next time.

I put my jon boat in over the weekend at Bowens Island, and I didnt’ dunk the trailer (cheap steel, not galv). The moment I got my boat off and seated it on the bank, a beefy 20+ foot something came by throwing a large wake, which washed my boat up a couple feet (no loss) but SOAKED the trailer. Some of these pork rinds are just real winners.

Moral judgment under girds the entire structure of laws and is necessary for the rational structure of any significant statute. The idea that our laws can stand independent of moral foundation is senseless.----- Albert Mohler.

I had a guy run over my line hooked up to a 100 lb tarpon once while in my kayak. I can relate to the feeling.

had the same bite, pattern. It was a big stingray. Lots of fun to land. Caught on Carolina Rig with cut mullet. Took 10 min to land.
