dont want anything to happen to any of you so thought Id pass this along to help keep you safe…Collin had a “spot” device with him on sunday and thye are pretty darn cool…and affordable. in fact west Marine and several other dealers have them on sale now for 100.00 or less with a 50.00 rebate! I bought one from West Marine today to take along…it hooks to your belt or clothes so is portable and will be great not only in our boat but when I go gigging with daddy this year…am going to go back and get him one too. Year service is 100.00…which equals about 8.50 a month …a lunch…Collin was able to show on my laptop everywhere we had been when we got back…c’mon guys…seems like a good thing to have for yourself and your loved ones…just passing on a good suggestion…heres a few pics
hurry…the rebate ends march 30th but you have until april 30th to mail it in…you can also google “spot” for other stores and yto download rebate.
Penny im used to seeing food on that stove pic! I got one and love it, can someone convince me why I would need an epirb?

Same reason you should have a type I PFD instead of a ski belt. Epirb is designed for worse case scenario fire, storm, capsize, etc. Spot is more of a check in device.
If you can’t fix it with a hammer, you’ve got an electrical problem.
My life and the life of my crew is worth well more than what an epirb costs… the spot just brings more human error in to play… “OHHH the other Joe Johnson didn’t pay his $100 dollar service charge… my bad… sorry that your dead… we will try to keep a closer eye on billing in the future”
Solo…I was trying to offer a alternative or a suggestion to folks who may not have a epirb for what ever reason/ those who might want a back up…or the guy/or gal who falls over and doesnt take the epirb with them( this is a clip on device)… the person who may just want a little something to send a message home saying we’re late but ok. something is better than nothing…and it doesnt hurt to have extra.A friend said his brother got lost hiking and they found him because of this little device…and you wonder if the guy who got lost in the kayak at the lake this year would have been found before it was too late if he had one…thanks for those who realized I was just trying to help by passing this on though…I have a epirb and one of these…and hope I never have to use either but if I do…they are there.
trex…next time I’ll arrange a little chicken and rice around it:smiley:
I think I read where the guys that sunk the Bertram a few months ago had a spot and an epirb and that the spot message was received and responded to before the epirb.
On another note. penfishn please get familiar with the spot gps format. It is in degree decimal not degree minute decimal like you are use to seeing on your chart plotter. Simple conversion but be sure you know how to do it and what you are looking at when you receive a message.

SPOT has just started ( Feb. 17 ) sending out the new and improved units. There’s an exchange prg. going on with some older unit that the company isn’t satisfied with… Something about battery life…?
I need one of these but I’d like to get the new version . Anyone know if these are the newer ones - they don’t look like they are comparing them to the ones on the website…
I saw the new ones and they have a few extra things on them…like a flip face…but was told they’ve had a few issues with them and actually had/have a recall with the spot2…the older ones work just fine and will not be pushed out by the new one…new ones range from 150.00 to 200.00 form what i could see.
the spot uses 2 AA lithium batteries…I got a neoprene case for it
and extra batteries but the salesperson said the batteries woork for a good while…

I would never say that… How in the hell do you plan on being found if you dont have and Epirb or spot??? And dont come back and say you have one… You just said and I quote “My life and the life of my crew is worth well more than what an epirb costs”… That means you do not own one IMO… The spot is just a back up that is all Penny was saying…
Do you have a back up GPS??? If so why??? “My life and the life of my crew is worth well more than what an extra GPS costs”*…
I have an Epirb, GPS, Back up GPS, Compass, Back up Compass. (and I always show a newbie the correct Compass heading before we ever cross out the rocks)
I never want to be on a boat offshore that dont have a Epirb on board… Dont want to end up the punchline in someone joke ya know.

I think he’s saying that he has an EPIRB and doesn’t see the point in having a SPOT, haz. His life and the lives of his crew are worth more than the cost of an EPIRB, so buying an EPIRB is a small price to pay for safety.
I have had the spot for a year and it works pretty well, but it takes a little while to send a message. As a backup, and to tell love ones you’re OK it is very good. Here is a cheap better alternative to a traditional EPIRB than the SPOT for life saving situations.

Your reply is a joke right? If it is not you must me a ****ing idiot if you think that quote m
read somewhere that captains that have an epirb on board have a greater amount of gray matter brain loss from the signals it recieves. and it makes them have a shorter temper.
thanks Penny, i like mine also.

I know my wife, my mother and my crew’s family members love the shared page! They can know where we are and that we are safe. Although, it is not an EPIRB substitute, it is great for what it does. And, for the poor folks like myself, it is better than nothing at all…
