A little help

I was wondering if you guys might point me in the right direction for places to put in to fish the Wando. I have done quite a bit of yak fishing in Florida(Banana River, Mosquito Lagoon) but since being back in Charleston I haven’t had much luck on the Folly side, other than Clarke Sound. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I thought it went: “There is no such thing as stupid questions; just questions from stupid people”.

I too have been exploring the Folly/Lighthouse creek system since last November. Also not having the numbers of trouts and reds those on the Wando report. I chalked it up to my lack of experience in that area and keeping exploring. The area seems to be virtually all mud bottom, little sand around. Lots of flooded grass and oyster beds obviously. I have’t ventured into Clarke sound but planned on going around 4 July week.

I’ve inquired on a couple of posts if this area is just environmentally sub-optimal habitat for bait, therefore less gamefish. I guess it goes back to the header quote.

I fish the Wando from the Paradise Island ramp. I have been out three times in the past three or four weeks and was skunked only once. That was a trip with my wife and I blame it on the tides. The other two times, I have caught fish. I don’t really know what I am doing, But I have a good time in those creeks. So far - 2 trout, 1 ray, 1 ladyfish, 1 flounder. Actually, that is more fish than my last 8 years combined.
I too have just started fishing in this area. I moved from CLT, but was in FL for 15 years before that and that is where I fished. I just couldn’t bring myself to take up freshwater fishing and longed to get back to the ocean.
I have been here for four years and this year I started fishing again.

Thanks for the replies guys. My biggest problem is that I don’t know my way around Mount P. I have done pretty well on trout in years past in the creeks off the Stono and around Cole’s Island, but mostly I was fishing out of my old scout. The tidal flow/currents around the Folly make it a pain to fish out of the yak. I lived on Clarke Sound for a couple of years and found a few good spots, but trying to navagite it from the Lighthouse Creek side can be really confusing, especially heading out of the sound. I haven’t had that much luck with redfish in Charleston…it’s starting to bug me…in Florida I didn’t have a problem at all.
Are the tidal flows and currents in the Wando and Cooper as bad as the Folly side? Also I’ve had really good luck on flounder and trout at King Creek Flats (in the scout), but haven’t found a good spot to throw in with the yak-it’s a long paddle from the folly landing.

So here’s a stupid Q: where’s King Creek Flats?

If you are driving down Sol Leagre road on James Island it’s on the left hand side about halfway to the boat ramp. It’s a kayaker’s paradise at low tide, tons of exposed oyster beds and too shallow in most spots for power boats, the only drawback is that I haven’t found a good spot to put the yak in without having a ton of water to cover to get there.

I’m with ya now. I fish the mouth of that creek, where it enters Folly Creek. Just haven’t ventured that far downstream yet. I launch from Bowen’s Island Ramp. The first creek on right takes you to shrimp boat dock you pass on Sol Legare Rd. The second creek on R takes me to King’s Flats. I’ll try it in 2 weeks. Can’t you just launch from Sol Legare Road somewhere also?

I completely forgot Bowen’s has a landing, they charge to put in there? Last time I put in at Sol Lagare, several years ago, I came back to find my window busted out and stereo stolen, so I don’t like parking at that landing. The rest is all private property and to be honest I really don’t feel like dragging a kayak across Mosquito Beach. Man am I itching to get out on the water tomorrow, I love having my weekends midweek!

It’s ranged from free to $1 to $2, depending on who’s around and collecting.

I’ve heard similar complaints from others parking at the public ramp on the Stono, although it hasn’t happened to me yet.

Were you catching flounder on those flats this time of year?

I’m out of town this weekend but will try 29 June-9 July.

I’ve been so busy this year with work I haven’t gotten out yet, but in years past the flats have produced well, I usually start tossing grubtails along the shoreline about 300 yards outside the flats and make my way between the oyster mounds, the backside of the first larger island on the flats has been really productive. I’m hoping to get out there more often now that we’re slowing down for the summer. Spoleto kicked our butts this year.
