GUYS WE ALL GET TOLD ALOT OF DIFFERENT STUFF IN REGARDS TO FISHING. EVERY ONE HAS THEIR OWN UNIQUE EXPERIENCES AND WE ALL HAVE OUR OWN PERSONAL TECHNIQUES THAT WORK FOR US. SOMETIMES WE HAVE TO TAKE THE INFO WE GET AND FIND OUR OWN WAY THROUGH IT TO FIND WHAT WORKS BEST FOR OUR PERSONAL FISHING STYLES. AND YES ITS HARD TO TEACH OLD DOGS NEW TRICKS!!! BUT HERE IS MY TAKE ON BRAID.
I JUST SWITCHED TO BRAID. POWER PRO 65. I ALWAYS FISH FROM SHORE(NO BOAT)!! I WAS VERY LEARY ABOUT BRAID BUT GAVE IT A WHIRL. WELL I LOVE IT. ILL NEVER SWITCH BACK.
I HAVE SPINNING RODS AND I DID NOT USE A MONO BACKER AS MANY SUGGEST BECAUSE I WANTED THE EXTRA YRDS WITH NO SPLICES. I LIKE TO SHARK FISH IN THE SURF AND THE BIG ONES CAN SURE TAKE ALOT OF LINE!!! AS FAR AS THE LINE SLIPPING, NO PROBLEMS HERE. I PLACED A PIECE OF TAPE ON THE SPOOL BEFORE A ATACHING THE LINE AS SUGGESTED BY POWER PRO. IT WORKS GREAT. NO SLIPPAGE AT ALL. IN FACT IT WAS EASIER TO SPOOL THAN THE 30 LB CAJIN I HAD BEEN USING.
KNOTS: TIEING OFF TO THE SPOOL I USED JUST A REGULAR SQUARE KNOT BUT YOUR HAVE TO TIE A LITTLE KNOT IN THE VERY END OF THE LINE THE STOP IT FROM SLIPPING THROUGH. I NOW KNOW THAT USING A UNI-KNOT AT THE SPOOL WILL HOLD BEST!!
TIEING LEADERS.DONT LET ALL THE HYPE FOOL YOU. I HAVE USED A CLINCH KNOT ON MONO FOR YRS AND NOTHING ELSE AND CAUGHT MASSIVE FISH ON IT. BUT WITH BRAID I SWITCHED TO THE INPROVED-CLINCH-KNOT. AND YES IT HOLDS GREAT AND NO IT DOES NOT CUT ITSELF LIKE SO MANY TRY TO SAY. I WAS KNOT-HEADED ABOUT THIS KNOT THING BECAUSE IM JUST KNOT-HEADED!!! I LIKE THE IMPROVED CLINCH BECAUSE ITS EASLY TO TIE AND I CAN TIE IT WITH MY EYS CLOSED OR IN THE DARK. IM SURE THAT SOME OF YOU COULD DO THE SAME WITH A UNI-KNOT OR OTHERS AS WELL BUT THE IMPROVED-CLINCH IS THE KNOT FOR ME.
FOR SPLICING LINE BRAID TO BRAID OR BRAID TO MONO THE UNI-KNOT IS THE WAY TO GO THERE NO QUESTION.
NOT TRYING TO CHANGE ANYONES MIND ABOUT THE WAY YOU DO THESE TINGS JUST SHARING MY EXPERIANCE. THIS NOT JSUT AN OPINION THOUGH THIS IS TESTED
Yea I used to use braid a while ago on a old quantum baitcaster for Largemouth. Its a very useful line with many benefits. Your rod reel might break before the braid will. It gives you the confidence to to land the big ones!
one mistake i see is loading too heavy a test braid because it will fit. this causes a lot of snapped rods and damage to reels according to some repairmen i know. i like a balanced system which lets me either put a ton of light braid on if i think i need it or save some bucks by just topping off with a hundred yards or so. in lighter tests i prefer spider ultracast or fireline because of less wind knots. i doubt its a problem with 65. i note that it is very hard to get people to try new line.
i like 15 lb. power pro myself. wadefishing you can cast that stuff a LONG ways. don’t forget the floro leader.

I prefer the palomar knot with braid.
Excuses? I’ve heard them all!
For tying braid to mono or fluoro leaders, I use an Albright Special. Never had it slip.

IMO this is the best connection, I also either 2X or 1.5X my wraps in anything to do with braid. Since I started doing that, not one knot failure. Also, Suffix braid is becoming one of my favorites, it is slicker and rounder than PP. I haven’t had my hands on any of the Moimoi stuff yet but am interested to hear some reviews.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Smokey Bear is right, with Braid, 2 words…Palomar Knot.

Palomar is a great knot for simple holding strength. Almost 100%. But, it’s shock strength is MUCH less. So, if you want to LAND that big fish that crashes through the surface to attack your bait, you better use a knot that can handle shock stress. Go with the Albright Special for attaching braid to larger diameter mono or fluoro.

I agree with the Albright Special for attaching mono or fluoro, good point there sir. Here’s a link on tying one on.

Palomar for line to hook. Surgeon’s knot to make a loop that then is used to make a slip knot on the spool, with a couple half hitches added to lock everything up. Loop should go in same direction as real turns to “grip” the spool.
