I got two Abu 5000 D reels from a neighbor this weekend, they look to be from 1974 and 1975 by the SN’s. I haven’t been able to find out a lot about them in terms of specs or recommended uses, rod pairings, etc. There’s a bit related to bass fishing out there, but not much inshore info. If anyone has any info on line weights, braid vs. mono compatibility, and their general use category (artificial/jig head, carolina rig or other bottom rig, trolling, etc.) I would appreciate the help. They seem like they are in good mechanical shape, so I anticipate finding a use for them.
Those and the 4500’s were prized freshwater reels in years gone by. I’ve had one of each and still use them in certain situations. I’ve never fished mine in saltwater. I don’t know how well they will perform over time when fished in saltwater. Hopefully someone else can give you more info about using them in saltwater.
being a D model the drag system is different. I believe the d stands for direct drive. Drag only works when handle is not engaged. Handle turns when drag is functioning.
It is a direct drive, but does have the casting free-spool button. Also has a clicker on it that you can engage as a line out signal. There is a knob for the drag adjustment not a star. They are 3 screw models. I found a schematic but no parts list, although there are some parts available online. I have not found any specs like line weight/capacity or max drag.
They feel like they are built to last with good cleaning and maintenance. They have been in a garage long enough for the rods they were on to develop a permanent bend from leaning on the wall and they still feel nice and smooth.
I’m going to spool one up with 20 lb braid and mono backing and go from there. I think it would be pretty cool to catch a fish on a reel as old as I am…
The drag on this reel works different than a star drag reel. The knurled knob on the backside of the handle is where your adjustment would be at. The reel and handle actually turns backwards, allowing the fish to take line.
Ya know, it must be nice living in Neverneverland. Remind me to come visit you, when I need a break from reality.
