abu 6000 pictorial

Ok guys I was pretty bored last night. I know alot of people do their own maintenance while others want to. I hope this helps.

I buy 99% of my reels on ebay. Unless it is sold as new the first thing I do is go through the reel as soon as I get it. I don’t care if its smooth as silk. I wanna take a peek. Also i want to try and NOT buy from locations that are really close to saltwater, but if the price is right I will…

Bought this reel this past weekend…It worked but wasn’t smooth

so here we go

take the screw out that holds the cap on. next remove the small “C” clip inside of the nut. (You do not want to lose this) If you do the reel will have a ton of in and out play in the handle.

continue taking the handle assemble apart as well as removing the star drag.

loosen the 3 flat headed screws completely and remove the side plate from the frame and set to the side. These screws will not come out due to a bevel on the inside. Do not loosen the 2 Phillips heads yet on this side. Also remove the spool and set it aside.

switch to other side and remove these 3 phillips heads. these screws will come out completely. Remove this side plate from the frame.

now take the cats paw out of the level wind by unscrewing the cap.

On the left side of the frame a clip holds the rest of the level wind together. remove this to slide level wind out.

Wow…Thanks Chip! Took mine apart lastnight and was hoping I didn’t forget anything. Definately a good reference to fall back on!

Great pictorial now if someone will loan me their 6500 I will practice on it!!

Chip,
VERY nice pictoral! I just did mine two weeks ago however I see that I did miss a few key areas that should have been re-lubed. I did clean all of my drag washers and it makes a huge difference.

Thanks so much for takin the time to share.

Great tutorial. There are a lot of “TIPS” listed on our club website and there haven’t been any new ones added for a long time. We should copy this tutorial and post it under the TIPS and Techniques page so it doesn’t get lost…

Thanks for taking the time to share this.

That was awesome. Always wanted to know how to take one apart…I have several 6500’s with bad worm gears. Thanks for the step by step!

Most of the time a good cleaning will fix a bad level wind. And if that don’t fix it buy a cats paw first. That usually goes before the worm gear does. They make ceramic paws you can buy on ebay that practically never wear out but are 2x the price of a factory one.

Great info Chip! Thanks for taking the time to do that.

I use 6500C’s and have one that occasionally just seems to slip into freespool right in the middle of reeling in. I’ve been hesitant to tear it down, but will for sure now with your pictorial as a guide.

Brake parts cleaner from any auto store. usually the cheapest they have. runs about 4-5$ for a pretty large spray can. Its back there with the carb cleaner stuff. I used to use carb cleaner but brake parts cleaner dries twice as fast.

If you’ve had fun catching fish on the transom bait, you are welcome…

I’ve spent about 85% of my life’s wages on fishing, the rest I just wasted…

What grease do you use after it is cleaned ??

experience noun \ik-#712;spir–#601;n(t)s

  1. the fact or state of having been affected by or gained knowledge through direct observation or participation

  2. that thing you get just moments after you needed it.

Yamaha’s yamalube or evinrude/johnson’s triple gaurd…both are that blue grease and seem to be great. Most of the info i get for reel fixes, ideas, etc come from alan tani’s website.

Slosir, google Alan Tani and go to his website, he has a pictorial on a TLD 25 which is exactly the same as a TLD 20…assuming it is a single speed version. They are quite simple actually, more so than that 6000 that just got cleaned on this thread.

bumping this up for this months meeting

Nice Job Chip… Saw one similar a few months back but better detail and discussion on yours… It takes time but worth keeping them in good working order. Thought you were going 7000’s? Ha!

VanMan

Van, yes I am going to the 7000’s for pulling bait. Still keeping 10 6000’s around for DR’s or party fishing…lol…

this was actually posted last Feb but I needed to copy and paste some pix for Tommy on upgrading and didnt want to have to dig for it everytime I needed one so I bumped it. And I am sure some people will want to look at it again after the presentation tommy gives.
