Abu 7000i Trolling

Who is the Abu expert out there? Has anyone heard of or used this model of 7000? There seems to be very little information online.

Can’t be any different than a reg 7k. Gear ratio? Abu is notorious for throwing a different color and sticker on a reel to gather hype.

After a LOT of searching I found the following info:
7000i Trolling has a 5.3:1 gear, 4 stack drag, and weighs 17.9oz

I can’t find any information on bearings/bushings.

The reason I ask is I found a place selling these reels for $99 new with free shipping. Says it lists for $169. Looks like I’m going to be a guinea pig!

Ok the gear ratio is different than the reg 7ks. The reg are 4.3:1 or 4. Something. It had zero spool bearing like the reg red 7ks. If it had bearings it would say it had them on the reel. It does have a IAR bearing though. It’s worth 99$.drag is the except it won’t have the carbon washers in them like the silver ones do.

Do not leave the clickers on. They wear out pretty fast on 7ks and are a pain to get them to work right again. I Ruined a couple clickers when a big fish made the initial strike and run. Never got them to work right. It turned the brass click paw into dust…lol…

Thanks for the advise. I don’t see how you could go wrong at that price. If the bushings/bearing or drag washers needed replacing down the road, I would assume most of those parts all interchange. I actually like the 5.3 ratio over the 4.1 of the other 7k’s.

If anyone else wants to try one of these, I will give them the web address I found. They also have a 7k Salmon Special with line counter for $99.

I was curious about them after seeing your post and decided to take a look. I couldn’t even find anything on their own site about them. I did see a couple of sites that showed “No Longer Available” and I did run across the place selling them for $99, but not much else. They must have marketed them with that model # for a very short time. Ebay shows a couple for sale, but both were more than $99 and probably didn’t include shipping. Like you said, probably hard to go wrong at that price.

I did some further digging and found that they are/were produced for the European line and not the American line. They seem to have totally different models for different countries. Either way, I purchased 2 of them because I’m a sucker for a “deal”. I will post a picture of the reel spec sheet when I receive them.

if they only made them for a short period of time, make sure the parts are interchangeable with other common models. you dont want to buy one, and then a year or so down the road have to replace a drag or something and not be able to get parts

Not sure what makes you think this. The 7000i DOES have level wind. If you look closely to the picture above, you can see the reflection of the line guide in the chrome.

Anyway, the 7000i is made in China (probably the Walmart effect) and has different springs and parts than either the “Made In Sweden” 7000’s or the “Assembled In Sweden” 7000’s. Some of the 7000i parts are plastic. Another difference, as Murraymaker pointed out, is the gear ratio. The 7000i is 5.3:1 and the 7000 is 4.1:1. The 5.3:1 ratio is the same as most of the Ambassadeur round reels in the C3 line.

There are many variations of the 7000. The originals were made in Sweden. Then there were those that were assembled in Sweden from parts made in Taiwan. Some were made entirely in Taiwan.

This is a picture of a 7000i internals.

You can see the differences. Here’s the forum topic where these photos came from. It’s a few years old, but still relevant. http://www.stripersonline.com/surftalk/topic/476136-abu-garcia-7000-made-in-china-and-sweden-difference/

Personally, I love and use the older, original “Made In Sweden” 7000 and have quite a few. Very easy to maintain with replacement parts readily available. Also, lots of upgrade parts available if someone wants to “hot rod” them. I have done some research on the history of the 7000 and it is difficult to understand and sort out.

Thanks for all of the help because I’m definitely not a reel expert. I’m sure the old 7000’s made/assembled in Sweden are better than the new stuff.

I was just wondering what was special about this “Trolling” model compared to a new C3. It seems that the biggest difference is the 5.3:1 ratio on a 7000 model. Most are 4.1:1. It has bushings on each side of the spool instead of bearings, but this could be upgraded. It also has teflon drag washers which can be upgraded if you feel the need. It does have levelwind.

All in all, I will never cast this reel. It will be used as a boat reel to pull planers. I’m going to take the chance on a couple and see how they work. If I blow one up on a 30lb striper, I will take it to Murrymaker for a rebuild!! lol

I never cast mine, either. Trolling or vertical jigging and down rodding only. But in my mind, the biggest and most important difference is not the gear ratio, but rather the plastic internal parts. I’m just leery of them. And if you do “blow one up”, I have no doubt that Chip is the man for repairs.
