Abu Garcia Parts?

Well, I am just now getting around to my winter maintenance on all my reels and getting ready for fishing again. Just completed all the clean/lube on my Shimano reels. However, I acquired 3 used Ambassadors this past season from my dad and need to do some cleaning/repairs on them. Where is the best place locally to pick up parts or order parts from? Thanks!

Online is the cheapest…what all do you need. I have some stuff from where I rebuild my 15 every other year. But it’s all used…lol…no sense in putting a used paw or worm gear in one, and that’s about all that go bad in them…

I would recommend putting a carbon fiber drag washer kit in them (9$) and if your going to put new paws in them spend the extra money and put ceramic paws in there. They won’t wear out in our lifetime but run around 10$ea versus the metal ones that are around 3-4$ea.

I can talk abu’s all day long. I love tearing into them. Got a plan here soon to hotrod my rod that I throw lures with from a C2 to a C6…talk about a smooth reel. If you need any help with them let me know. I did a rebuild tutorial over on the MSC board awhile back. It’s was on a 6000 but it’s the same for 4600-6600 with the exception of the clicker style. Unless your reels are from the 80’s or real early 90’s but still not alot of difference even then except the drag assembly.

Won’t know what I need to repair until I get them apart, but I do know that one of my main drive shafts needs replacing because someone stripped the threads putting the handle on. The handle is just about to fall off. Also some issues with one of the clicker slide knobs not working. If you have a used drive shaft that would be awesome.

Thanks for reminding me to replace the drag washers. I put them in my Calcutta and it made a big difference. Will definitely do it to the Abu’s.

Do you recommend upgrading the worm gear to a double ball bearing set if you don’t plan on casting with it? These reels are just my live bait reels. I have Calcuttas and Stradics for casting.

I wouldn’t do the bearing upgrade if they are not used for casting. A upgraded levelwind will cost you in the neighborhood of like 20-30$ just not worth it for bait rods. That’s why I use 6000’s. Cheaper without that 3rd and 4th bearing.

I have at least 4 or 5 drive shafts I am pretty sure, but there are a couple different designs to them. Some are mounted to the internal side plate while others come off. But either way shouldn’t be a problem there.

Places to look for other parts are mikes reel repair. They are pretty fair on prices. Tuna reels .com is good and prob the best is ebay…lol… drag washers I find on ebay or just call smoooothdrags to order straight from them.

Those clicker assemblies are very basic. The ones that usually mess are ones people have had apart and didn’t put back together right and are usually the 6000 style with the thin copper strip. They can bend easily and cause them to bind.

Thanks for the help. I’ll let you know once I get them inspected.

Murrymaker,

Would you be interested in repairing/performing reel maintenance for someone with Abu’s or Daiwa’s for a reasonable charge?

Looks like I need the following.

Just the handle nut, cap and screw, driveshaft is fine
2 6500 spool bearings
1 left side plate screw
2 6500 carbon drag washer sets

The clicker issue is the thin spring plate that holds the plastic lever onto the side plate. It is supposed to keep tension on the clicker spring assembly when engaged, but it so weak that the clicker slide gets pushed up from the springs, and also doesn’t engage the side gear properly. Any ideas?

I also had a question about an older 6500 C4. It is an original series high speed blue and silver reel. When I spin the handle freely and then grab the handle, the spool continues but makes a clicking noise. The reel works as it should, but its like it has some type of free spin mechanism so your hand doesn’t get hit by the handle or something. Weird.
