Tons of acorns on live oaks this year! After the baby storms from Florence we had tons on the ground. Most gone, when they do actually drop it should be a feast for the deer and Turkey. Persimmon trees loaded as well. Can really see them early after all these dang caterpillars stripping the leaves.
wonder when the full “rut” will be this year?
If you go on the old wives tail of a lot of acorns on the trees … We should have a COLD winter.
I have a lot of caterpillars nest on my persimmon trees and pecans.Does anyone know a poison that will get rid of them?Keep them from forming actually. The trees are too tall to reach nest.Farmer’s almanac says it is going to be a cold winter.Y’all need to find some big white oak acorns to sit near.
The big food item now is muscadines. The deer will gorge on them when they drop. A few years back I shot a buck in late Sept that had nothing but grapes in his belly and his teeth were stained purple. They will walk by a corn pile to get to grapes
I am hunting an area where I have no corn, but has plenty of acorns tonight. Maybe my luck will change. I only saw a 4pt yearling last night eating my corn.

Sitting in the stand yesterday and only one deer out of 12 ate off the corn pile i was sitting over… all others were eating acorns and what little winter peas and rye was left. We got three does and one 182# 6pt. Probably the nicest 6 pt i’ve seen, made a youngster super happy. Aged him around 6- 8 years. We were hoping for some of the bigger boys we’ve got on camera, but they were no shows for a day time presence.
Saw my first moma and baby at 5:00 and the group started showing around 6:30. Pretty much the same for everyone else.
Years ago I shot a 180# 6 point. It was leading the Cordray’s contest for the heaviest deer until the last day and lost. I shot him quartering away. I could not believe he was only a 6. I was shocked and a little disappointed when I got next to him.

They are still raining down on my stand. It seems like it was times up well with our planting as the fields are growing well since the deer are occupied by the acorns. Normally they keep our fields mowed down but not this year. When the acorns dry up they will have a feast of greens.
