Acres of Spanish on the North Jetty ocean tip

Just got a report of “ACRES OF FISH” busting the surface at the tip of the North Jetty. It is that time of year that the Spanish are out in numbers. Who knows what tomorrow will bring with those fish though. I plan to check it out if the weather doesn’t keep me from doing so in the am.

“I have tomorrow open!”

I saw some jumpin about halfway back from the north tip right in the middle of the channel today. Wish I had some spanish lures with me

I’ve never fished for spanish mackerel…what’s the best lures to throw at them?

Small, slender, but heavy spoons that you can cast a mile and retrieve ultra fast without them spinning is what works for me. Gotcha plugs work well and lead headed grubs will catch em but plan on 1 grub per fish. The key though is lots of speed on the retrieve.

White bucktails work well when using a Florida whip retrieve. Basically working the lure back at high speed while quickly raising and lowering the rod tip.

I always have success with Clark spoons.

Do they ever get close enough to catch them from the beach?

“In every species of fish I’ve angled for, it is the ones that have got away that thrill me the most, the ones that keep fresh in my memory. So I say it is good to lose fish. If we didn’t, much of the thrill of angling would be gone.” Ray Bergman

Try Folley Pier with Gotcha plugs

they were out there today.

Thanks for the advice on which lures to use…going to pik up a selection today.

Do you think that the full moon tide will have an affect on the fishing for Smacks like it does on some of our other inshore species?

My spanish arsenal in order: deadly dick, gotcha plug, clark spoon. Tight lines

Fish to live.

What flys work well? Im thinking Clousers.

I wouldn’t use a Clouser… they don’t hold up… Try a Mushmouth, or any small epoxy baitfish patterns, and strip the hell out of em’…

We worked the jetties Saturday morning, but no luck. Caught a jack and a bluefish, but no Spanish. Didn’t see any birds to speak of either.

We were out Friday afternoon during the outgoing - in the forcasted 5-10MPH winds that were actually 15-20+. No birds seen anywhere.

Chrome/blue back rattle trap, retrieved as fast as possible. Just don’t stop your retrieve!

Too many fish, Too little time!

Any size to them? I’ve been trolling blue/white, pink/white, green/white and rainbow colored Billy Baits Mini Turbo Slammers on spinning rods for 20-35" Cero Mackerel in 30-80’ on the reef line the past week down here. They’re always around but they’ve moved in hot and heavy lately. I wonder if that technique would be as effective on the Spanish in the dirty water as it is for their cousins in the clear reef water of the Keys.

If you’re gonna catch them, get the big ones…;)))
