Just got a report of “ACRES OF FISH” busting the surface at the tip of the North Jetty. It is that time of year that the Spanish are out in numbers. Who knows what tomorrow will bring with those fish though. I plan to check it out if the weather doesn’t keep me from doing so in the am.
Small, slender, but heavy spoons that you can cast a mile and retrieve ultra fast without them spinning is what works for me. Gotcha plugs work well and lead headed grubs will catch em but plan on 1 grub per fish. The key though is lots of speed on the retrieve.

I’ve never fished for spanish mackerel…what’s the best lures to throw at them?
White bucktails work well when using a Florida whip retrieve. Basically working the lure back at high speed while quickly raising and lowering the rod tip.
Do they ever get close enough to catch them from the beach?
“In every species of fish I’ve angled for, it is the ones that have got away that thrill me the most, the ones that keep fresh in my memory. So I say it is good to lose fish. If we didn’t, much of the thrill of angling would be gone.” Ray Bergman
Any size to them? I’ve been trolling blue/white, pink/white, green/white and rainbow colored Billy Baits Mini Turbo Slammers on spinning rods for 20-35" Cero Mackerel in 30-80’ on the reef line the past week down here. They’re always around but they’ve moved in hot and heavy lately. I wonder if that technique would be as effective on the Spanish in the dirty water as it is for their cousins in the clear reef water of the Keys.
