additional speakers

in my boat i cannot hear the music while underway. when i am running offshore for hours at a time, i would like to hear the music playing at the helm without blowing out the people in beanbags. the only way i can do that now is to have the speakers at near full blast. here is my idea:

get 2 (or 4?) speakers mounted in the t-top electronics box, pointing down (and outboard?). also have a separate amplifier for those speakers, that way i could mount a separate volume (gain) control dial inside the electronics box, in the vhf panel. this way when running, the speakers can be at a comfortable level in the back deck so people can sleep, but i can crank it up loud for the people at the helm. right now the 4 aft deck speakers in the stock locations are run from the clarion head unit amplifier, so using secondary outputs with a high power amp i can hypothetically overpower the 40w fed to the speakers in the back. which would allow the t-top speakers to rock out without keeping the riders awake.

has anyone had any experience with wiring speakers in this configuration? i think the hardest part will be finding a good 100 RMS per channel amp with a gain control.

Baracuda, if you don’t get the reply you want here check with Wildlifesc on the Bft/HHI site. He can do most anything electronics wise on a boat.

Good luck!

thanks for the heads up!

i bought the boat new about 2 years ago, and now i can finally store and work on it at home: much easier than in a storage yard. have a bunch of little electrical tweaks that need to be done (move batteries, ACR re-wiring, speakers, charger), but i am kind of a bull in a china shop when it comes to finesse work!

ok, so picked out a nice JL 900/5 amplifier on the cheap, gotta love cyber week. 4 components at 100w each and 500 watts for the subs. hope its enough power for the highs?

I’ve got that same amp w/ (4) JL M770’s and (1) M10 sub. Alpine CDA 118M head unit and that thing will flat out jam. I can crank it up while running wide open and hear nothing but clean sound.

oh good… just making sure. i love the HD series amps. have a 600/4 and a 900/1 in my truck and they do pretty good. wasnt quite sure about in the open.

where are your speakers mounted? in the gunnles or up high? i was looking at the same 770 components in the electronics box, 2 firing down, and 2 firing out.

also, for the sub i was thinking about putting it under the console all the way forward (under the seat up there). looking at either a 12" solobaric L7 or a 10W7 to round it out. just need to measure and see if i can make a good box to fit. i like the idea of the infinite baffle open air woofer, but i cant bring myself to cut holes in the console!

My amp is the marine version (MHD 900/5), not an automotive amp. Is your amp auto or marine?

My speakers are in the gunnel, down low because I don’t have a T Top.

the only difference between the marine series and auto is stainless mounting hardware and a white paintjob. the auto and marine models are both class D, which is why they are so small and efficient.

Wildlifesc in Beaufort did some electrical work for me last summer. I bought a used boat and I needed some new accessories installed and a checkup on all systems. His work is excellent!!! A pleasure to do business with.
