My buddy and I are taking out his 18 Sea Hunt on Saturday. Not sure where he wants to put in yet but probably will fish the Wando. We won’t be able to get out until around 1:30 (dead low) so will be fishing the incoming. He doesn’t have a lot of experience in the river/creeks and mine isn’t much more.
For a strategy, I’m thinking throwing shrimp/mud minnows on a popping rig around docks, oyster beds and grass banks near a creek mouth. If that doesn’t produce same bait on the bottom on Carolina rig (I assume we’ll lose a lot of rigs).
Any other advice on bait, specific structure to fish, strategies to fish an afternoon incoming?
Thanks.
My advice would be to prepare for every dock and spot you are interested in being covered up in boats, and to try not to get frustrated. Saturdays in the wando…ugh.
Your plan seems sound to me. Keep moving around till you find fish. If you don’t get bit in 10 -15 min after being at a spot…move.

Also, for fishing under a popping rig, do you add a flouro leader from bottom of the cork to the hook? Do you need a split shot a foot or so above the bait?

You had me second guessing myself with the tide this weekend. I had planned to take the family out at sunrise to catch the low tide! I am not that good at fishing high to low, but would assume fish will be in some of the same places. May want to focus on some grass lines and feeder creeks, as the reds will be coming out with the tide. Hopefully some of the pros will chime in. When fishing a popping cork, I usually put 24"-36" of flouro on the weighted end of the float. I have never put a split shot, but maybe others do. Wish I was more help! If you ever need help on chunking bait under docks and hoping for the best, I am your guy! Good luck

Thanks Cwest, good info. What are you goin to be throwing on Saturday AM? Are you gonna try to catch any bait? I think I’m going to buy bait since I won’t have all day to fish and don’t want to spend half the time looking for bait. I think one of us will use shrimp, the other mud minnows, might even try a shrimp/fiddler cocktail if necessary. Give the fish a choice and see why they’re in the mood for.
I am going to catch mullet with the cast net. They are pretty thick in the creek and finding them at low tide is pretty easy. Since you are going out at high tide, I would buy bait as well. Shrimp always seem to work well, and most people catch fish with mud minnows. We always use the 15 minute rule, like opti said. If we don’t get a bite in 15 minutes we leave. Good luck
