Advice for Murray Newbie

Im heading to my folks house in Columbia this weekend, looking forward to trying out some striper fishing on Murray. I grew up in Cola, but did most all of my fishing at Wateree and Congaree.

Ive been learning about downlining BB and freelining, but Ive never really fished much at Murray.

My father and I are planning on an early morning trip Saturday, any location or technique advice?

BTW, I’ll have a VHF if anybody is listening out, not sure of a channel on the lake though.

Thanks for any help.

Sal, Please e-mail me at magnawake@netzero.com and I’ll give you the low down. I was on the fish, but now I’m not. I’ll give you the secret spot, ha-ha.

the secret spot is around the towers. Just look for the boat parade.

Also fish early morning and evening.

Dangit Steely !! I was the guy in the front of the parade. Naa, its not that good anymore. I think the full moon has them screwed up this week.

Thanks for the heads up, Im guessing it’ll be a parking lot out on Saturday, espcially with the nice weather temps. Probably gonna put in at the ■■■■, hows the water level??

I havent been out to the lake since January and man was it down.

BTW, what is a leadcore? is that wire line? I have a few umbrella rigs from fishing up on the Chesapeake, I can give those a try. When yall are down lining, what depths are you working? Or are ya just trying to adjust according to your fish marks on the FF?

about how long will BB’s stay alive in an un-insulated livewell? My SeaHunt has a livewell, but nothing but fiberglass no foam.

Thanks for any info.

Hey salty, E-Mail me and I’ll give you my ph #. You can call me and I’ll spill my gutts. I’m doing a woodworking project and cant spent the time typing (hunting & pecking).

magna, youve got mail…

If you freeze a couple bottles of water then add them to the bait, they will stay alive. I’ve even dumped ice in without trouble. some say the ice will kill them, but that has not been my experience. Maybe lakeworld’s ice is filtered.

I’m a newbie, but I did pick up a 28" at the towers last Sunday night right at dark. Not many boats were out and I didn’t see any other fish caught.

Thanks for all the contributors to this forum for all of the great information.

Hopefully I can return the favor some day with some good tips. But you will have to teach me a bit more first.

I plan on trying again this weekend

putting your ice in a quart sized ziplock bag works well too.

I’ve also heard if you throw in a handful of rocksalt that helps also.

Why do you have to use a round bait tank. I used a livewell with corners and never had a death. Is it maybe the loss of scales?

Went yesterday afternoon/last night. fished for a couple hours around dam with 17 other boats. Had a few runs. Ended up catching a 29" and a 31" fish. Got off the water around 10pm. BB herring on down rods from 25’ to 40’ deep in the channel.
