Advice on a Sit In Kayak

I have a 15’ Ocean Kayak sit on top that I have never fished from, but I have enjoyed many a good paddle in it.

It is a great yak, but I want to move to a sit in model. The sit on is so heavy and slow through the water. Anybody got any thoughts on a mid level priced sit in model that works for a 6’3", 200 lb. paddler? I am thinking $1000-$1500. Can’t afford a composite.

I am going to the festival in a couple of weeks. Looking forward to some shopping there.

There’s a nice Current Designs Squamish on Craigslist right now. 6’3" might be the hard part for you. I had to move the foot braces in my Dagger Edisto and plug the old holes.

My favorite was a Wilderness Systems Sealution that I sold last year. AMAZING speed and comfort for a tall guy.

There should be quite a few boats in the yard sale at the ECCKF.

I think I saw a Sealution or two for sale cheap at the used equipment sale at Sea Kayak Carolina this weekend. I’d bet they still have them. Not sure if they’d handle 6’3". There is a Sealution 2 that is longer but I don’t know if it has more leg room.

If you plan on fishing from your kayak I would recommend you do not get sit in kayak. What you are looking for in speed will be lost in the lack of practicality.

Sammie, I sent you a PM but don’t know if you saw it. I don’t seem to get notification if someone PM’s me…

I am looking forward to the festival to find out what fits me. Thanks for the replies everyone.

Before I got my SOT, I fished from sit in type kayaks a good bit. I caught plenty of trout out of them and had a lot of fun. But, I do have to say that after fishing the SOT, it is much easier to fish from. You can take more junk with you and get to all of it much easier. The boat just seems a lot easier to use for fishing.

Now back when it was cold out, I was wanting a sit in style of kayak again. But thats just becasue of the temps.

Gonna disagree with most and say I prefer my pungo sik. I sit on the back deck while paddling and sit higher than my previous redfish.

Pamlico 14 angler has served me well.

That’s a Sealution II XS and is 14.5’. Not good for a large paddler. I think the regular Sealution II is something like 17’…
