Hey, great forum! I wil travelling to Charleston during the week of July 25 thru Aug 1. My 17 year old son and I are very experienced fisherman but have never tried anything around the ocean. We are staying in the Isle of Palms area. My question is what are our best options to fish from shore and catch fish, andy type of fish will do. We would like to toss lures and are thinking about bringing our rods and reels. Baitcasters and spinning gear, 14 lb test line - 6 ft 6 inch rods are what we generally use. Would these work? If not is there anywhere we can rent stuff for a week. We are willing to drive some up to 50 miles either way to find fish. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
thanks doug
You’ve found the right place for the advice you’ll need to fish the beaches of S.C. Just sorry, “I DON’T HAVE ANY RIGHT NOW”!!
Read this well before you arrive.

All Atlantic coast fishing is pretty similar. Your best result would be either call (or stop by) one of the many local fishing stores and ask them to sell you bait and tackle suited for the fishing rods/reels you already own or if you really want to actually catch saltwater fish, rent one of the many many local fishing guides.
The 14lb baitcast rods you have will likely not be worth bringing unless you want to fish some of the fresh water ponds. The tackle shops should be able to tell you where the ponds are, also.

Bring “your” stuff, It’ll work great, until you adapt to the conditions, and decide if you need more!!
You sound like green bass fishermen, it will cost you a little money but hire a guide for a day and go after reds. You will love them on bass tackle

Your base gear will do fine…you have PM.

We caught a few Pompano in the surf recently on grubs(rootbeer w/ gold sparkle tails on 3/4 oz jigheads. they were all gently released to grease and were delicious!

Where will you be staying? If is the Sea Pines, you will have access to the pier. Light stuff works, but rinse it well.

I may be mistaken, but I was told only Sea Cabins, and Ocean Side Villas, have access to the pier.
