As a novice flyfisherman, I have enjoyed freshwater fishing in Pennsylvania for Bass. I am hoping to move to the area and am looking for a good setup for saltwater.
Should I go with 9 or 10 WT? I will start out fishing the surf I think and go from there…
Thanks!!!
i fish a 10 in the surf, but a 9 would prob be a better all around rod of the 2. 8 wts are generally preferred but 9’s are great when the wind picks up

Thanks. I was trying to figure out one choice instead of buying 2 rods. If I buy a 9, I am sure it will be ok. BTW… I understand that people don’t fish blind. That may be an issue for me because I don’t have a boat. That is one reason I was thinking surf would be a good option.
sight fishing is still available certain months in the surf…a canoe or kayak/ ol beater jonboat will open up worlds to ya…

Thanks. One last question… Is an 8wt really the best choice in the area? I am looking for a good all around rod.
I have both an 8wt and a 9wt. I find myself picking up the 9wt more often for the salt due to wind. I can get it out there noticeably easier than the 8wt.
I was thinking of using it in freshwater as well…
Having both 8 and 9 wt. rods for the salt, I also find myself going with my 9. The added punch into the wind makes the difference. When you hook up a jack crevalle or a big ladyfish you will appreciate the extra backbone in a 9.
