Dear Bill…The most productive area close to the mouth of Shem Creek is Haddrells Point, and I don’t mean the tackle shop. The point itself(on the port side leaving the creek) is an actual landmark, but the marsh area in front of it is a very good fishing location. The fact that that marsh has docks built all over it presents a tactical challenge getting to the marsh edge on a rising tide, but a smaller boat such as yours has the advantage there. The channel that allows the shrimp boats to navigate that stretch provides a depth that allows staging fish to relax at a cooler water column before swimming out on the flooding tide to the marsh edges to begin foraging. There are areas that have cuts and sloughs that allow the rising tide to enter the marsh edge, and those are natural pathways for the foraging fish, mostly spottails, and there are oyster rakes and banks that hold flounder and trout. You could also target the docks as they will hold fish like sheepshead, with the occasional trout, spot, and toadfish for good measure. The moon, wind, and tide are yours to figure out, as well as the terminal tackle that you choose, the knots you tie, and how you hold your mouth. In other words…I can tell you WHERE to go, but you have to figure out HOW to catch fish, and WHEN to catch them. Relax, and enjoy the learning curve. Mine lasted about 10 solid years.

Bill…I’m sure you don’t intend to do this, but someone else reading my post might get the smart idea to fish in the shrimp boat channel since the fish are staging there…DON’T!!! You will get run over, verbally abused, and maybe even shot…and you will deserve all of that if you anchor up in that important navigational channel. Work the marsh edges, and be mindful of large wakes from speeding 24 foot run and gun redfish cowboys, and mindless party boaters.
