Sorry if this has been answered plenty of times on this forum. I’m trying get a new fly rod on ebay or something and not sure if I need an 8, 9, 10wt.
Mainly for reds, but would also like the opportunity to get something bigger on occasion. Meaning, dolphin, jacks, tarpon possibly. Just looking for the best overall weight.
Is a 10wt too strong for the reds? I’ve got a 6wt right now, which is good for the trout and stuff, but think I need to move up.

Advise on anything would help. Appreciate it.
Stoner. I use a nine weight for Reds. It has the backbone to horse fish when your in the grass and it also allows for better casts into the wind. The fight is not quite as fun but you don’t wear the fish out as much. As for the tarpon and jacks, from what I have heard and read you don’t want anything smaller than an eleven weight. If your only going to get one rod I would go with the ten weight but your best bet if you can afford it is to get a nine and an eleven.
Schoolie dolphin, yes…Anything over 15 pounds and you stand the chance of having your chops busted or your rod! A 30 pounder and you got big problems!!! If you want a rod for offshore as well go nothing less than double digits!!!
I’d go with 9 wt if you want to catch jacks, dolphin, and other bigger fish. I use a 10 wt for the bigger stuff usually but if your only getting one go with the 9.
If a man wakes up early to go fishing he 's sleep deprived, If a man wakes up late to go fishing he’s fish deprived
I would say a nine weight with a reel that has room for lots of backing. That would give you a good red setup and if you were hunting Jacks and other larger fish…You would have a battle on your hands…You may lose…but with the extra backing you still stand a chance. It also depends on how nice the rod is and how stiff the butt section is.
Ive been pretty happy with the higher end Sage and Scott rods. If you break it…Just send it back and the will replace it for a small fee. If you get spooled you loose about a $60 dollar flyline
Anyway goodluck
I would suggest that you try to figure out if you plan to target mostly red fish and most of the smaller kinder and gentler inshore stuff such as spanish, smaller snook and peaanut dolphian opposed to targeting the larger snook, poons, jacks, kings, blues & stripers. If you are after the big boys and plan to fishing a lot in the wind you need a 10 weight. If you are doing mostly inshore stuff you should strongly consider an 8 weight. If you are still not sure then a good 9 weight is good place to start if you are only going to buy one rod. Just remember that staggering your rod weights by twos is a go way to go if you are really in to fly fishing, a 6, 8 & 10 weight would make you good to go for just about anything that swims excepts the biggest and baddest poons, snooks and off shore monisters. I’ve got a couple of 9 foot three piece Albirght EXS that I’ll cut loose for $225.00 a rod. I’ve only got one 8, one 9 & one 10 weight left. If you want all three I’ll make ya a deal and you will have three first class rods for the price of one good quality rod. If you are interested email me @ jmbevins@suddenlink.net.
This is a great reference. I am planning on getting that redington rod as soon as I can afford it and a new reel. I use a 8wt and its plenty for the reds well atleast I think so. I was actually considering a 7wt but then again I dont want to harm the fish and I am no pro with the flyrod, yet atleast:wink:. Good luck hope this link helps.
You can’t beat a pflueger combo for the price. Great drag systems. I’ve caught spadefish on thier 8wt. Try the Plueger Trion rod and President fly reel. You really can’t find a nicer combo for less than $300. I have 4wt through 10 wt and love them all.
