Redington, TFO, Greys all make good inexpensive stuff.

Was in Charleston Angler (West Ashley) the other day and they had a 6 wgt. Ross package that was rod, reel, line, backing, and case for $200. Thought about getting it myself, but, just don’t need another setup. Maybe a little light for reds, but, maybe not. I have usually used my 8 wgt for reds, but, have only had one take me to the backing. A 6 wgt. might be more sport. And, it would be more useful in the smaller fresh water ponds and such around the area.

I got set up by this guy by the last name of peralta from the Charleston angler. Probably the nicest guy i have met. Very knowledgable and lets you test out all the rods you want. Anyways i told him i was looking for afforadble. The TFO lefty kreh he said is as good as a 500 or 600 dollar pole. I tried it out and fell in love. My pole a TFO lefty Kreh series 9 weight cost me 109.00 my line cost me 80.00 and my reel cost me 50.00 so 240 for the set up wasnt bad. But i now know that you can buy really cheap fly line that is high quality from looking at the posts on here. But i have a Okuma reel and its a great reel. You can find some Okumas for really cheap. But deffinatly check that guy Peralta out and he will tell you everything you need to know and as far as costumer service goes he is one of the best.

i still think the okuma slv is the best for the price. when Lefty was here he made the point that any rod over 150 is wasted on most of us.

he’s pretty white for a fly guy

I love my 8/9 Wt Okuma SLV. I bought it for 50 bucks from a tackle store somewhere in michigan. It was the best deal i found on the internet!

I second Hit’s suggestion… I have a few SLV’s and LOVE 'em… The Reddington Surge reel is pretty nice for a low cost reel but the drag is solid…

Hey Hutch Lefty ain’t met me then haha, we need to fish soon buddy i was headed to Alaska to take a guiding job this summer but postponed till next year when i’ll be makin the bigger bucks; I couldn’t ignore the tarpon and bikinis this summer. But yea but my boy David Peralta at the angler provides about the best customer service anyone could ask for, he’ll hook ya up. Scotty’s new shop in Mt. P has got some great rods too, i havent really checked out the lower end models on account of slobbering over the 12 and 14wts but im sure they could hook you up too. The TFO’s have got some great pricetags, but i grew up fishing redingtons cause i was the embodiment of ElCheapo, so as far as cheap goes they have always treated me well, and Ned and all the guys at Sage/Redington are on point with the customer service as well. Practice with any rod and you can nail bass and trout down here.

Looks like you got some good advice here. I would suggest testing out some rods at a shop before you make your final decision.
