Can anyone recommend a trustworthy and affordable mechanic for an old outboard? I was given an old 18 horse Mercury, but it has not been run in a couple years.

Can’t help you on a mechanic in that area, but I believe 1985 was the last year mercury made the 18hp. An old boat motor can quickly turn into a money pit. get the carbs clean and then find out it needs a coil get one and then find the foot is getting water in it, put in new lower unit seals and then find your getting water on a piston… pull the head and ring off a couple of bolts… get all that fixed and take it to the water only to have to keep priming the bulb to get back to the hill because the diaphragm in the fuel pump is dry rotted… etc
Then again, you may have inherited a motor that you run the heck out of for the next 10 years.

If you have NO mechanical background and have to rely on someone to fix it, it could cost you hundreds without ever getting it running. Then you are trying to sell a motor that you know is broke.If you have a little bit of mechanical ability, run through all the YouTube videos you can stand to look at before you have someone look at it. Just MY thought.
