Came home yesterday and my daughter had just got back from fishing. She asked if I would help her clean them. She scaled and I butchered. She kept ten out of sixty. Mom vouched for her.

Teach her to use a spoon for scaling. Done right she can make long streaks without scales flicking all over her and be quicker at it. Nice looking fish and good for her being able to go out like that. My daughter live beside the GCR and is beggin me to leave a boat over there for her.

also if you notice the bass she is scaling has already been de-headed. Told her it’s much better to scale first.
Have used a spoon, but the ticket is the thick bladed “scaler” under the big knife. Her and her cousin came home yesterday with 18 more that I had to use the headlights to help them clean.

you rekon they got enough knives?
Heck no. If I was to tell you the variety and number of different animals and fish that have been cleaned on and near that sink you probably wouldn’t believe me.
Those are scrub knives that stay out 24-7 I do have some really neat one that don’t get used though.
Daughter and niece brought back more Yesterday, so cool to see them interested in fishing while on summer break! I did something special this time, I filleted 14 very nice bream. Now that was some fine eating, not really that much waste and I’m the only one in the family that likes pickin the meat off the bones.

Dad’s pond, just called to see if the wife needed anything on my way home. She brought home another 20.
I believe that puts the count over 130ish for her this week.
Way to go! Ever tried a high pressure nozzle on a water hose. It gets you soaked but knocks the scales right off.
WILDBILL
Soak fish in vinegar and water solution for 30the minutes. Wash scales off with ease.
fish today work tomorrow
Use a weed eater to remove the scales, or better yet just run them all through a wood chipper, works way faster than scaling them.
I make a special catfish scaler for $9.99 ($19.99 shipping) if interested. Works on eels and turtles as well.
Now, aside from all that, your girl is one fishing phenom, that’s awesome. When I was younger, I remember that nothing tasted better than fish that I caught and cleaned, dad fried, and mom made hushpuppies for.
Moral judgment under girds the entire structure of laws and is necessary for the rational structure of any significant statute. The idea that our laws can stand independent of moral foundation is senseless.----- Albert Mohler.
Fred, how old is this young lady? You might want to go with her once in a while, to find out her secret. Pretty soon she won’t tell you her numbers:smiley:

Man you about put a tear in my eye! Last in the house, she’s 17. No problem on the numbers! She’s been everydwhere with me except off shore, the company that I’ve been out with wouldn’t have been the best influence for a young girl. I’m also a bit paranoid/protective to take her that far from land.
Chicken hawk… Never heard that before. I’ve never really cared for pond fish once the weather warms up, most usually get that kind of mud taste. I would imagine that might help on that?
Redfish, I’d love to see that catfish scaler.!
No fishing today, we went to see Iron man III. Pretty good.
Fred when she gets ready to go to collage, send her to one with a Bass Fishing Team. As much as she likes to fish she could get a scholarship. Have you seen those kids fish on TV. They get credits for fishing.
I’ve been using electric fillet knives ever since I first saw them in action several years ago. You can average about a fish every minute or two using them. Since the limit has been dropped on white perch the electric is the only way to fly (fillet). They even take the skin off of catfish quickly and efficiently. Big stripers take maybe 2 or three minutes because of the tough ribs in them. Try one and you’ll forget all about scaling gutting etc. Or atleast I have.
spoonmaster, no doubt on the electric fillet knife! And when a fish is big enough most do get filleted. Here’s the thing, I actually like the skin on a Red fish, and trout when fried! Also on bream and bass.

I just bought my first electric filet knife… I love it!! I watched a video on youtube, I think it was “How to clean a catfish in 15 seconds”… I watched the video several times and then went at it… I am not as good as the guy in the video yet, but pretty dang close for the first time doing it… I will never skin another cat ever again!!
